PS3 launched with violence
on: November 19, 2006, 02:06:43 PM
*edit* OMG I must be tired and groggy. uhhh.....this belongs in the anything but piano forum. MY BAD! lol
anyone read this story?
https://www.theage.com.au/news/Technology/PS3-Launch-Marred-by-Violence/2006/11/17/1163266744345.html
I'm from the USA, but google came up with this page from au. haha
Anyway...it just BLOWS MY MIND that people would shoot, stab and trample each other over a VIDEO GAME SYSTEM. JUST TO BE THE FIRST ONE TO HAVE A PS3. this is total madness.
and then I read this story about OJ writing a book called "IF I DID IT" about how he WOULD have killed Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman. I'm sorry but if he was really innocent...he would not have written such a book.
WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!?!? AAAAARRRRRGHHHH!!!!

agreed. my son told me that ps3 story the other night. it's sad - because the night before - he was talking about how so many people wanted the system and how only a certain number of them are sold to the usa (so people have to fight over them). i asked if he wanted one - and he said - only if i were to sell it. he's 17 now - so thankfully he's not as addicted as he once was.
after seeing how it affected his homework and studies - i'd say to parents - don't feel badly if you child can't get it. in fact, be happy. they'll probably last another year or two not addicted to computer games. gaming is a drug.

I used to be such a kid. I had a game boy, a nintendo, a super nintendo, a nintendo 64 and later a PS2. I only had about 50 games total (combined!) but I played them obsessively from about age 10 to about age 16. That was a lot of time I spent on video games. However I was ALSO obsessed with computer programming and got pretty decent at it....I'm graduating in december with a degree in computer science.
I would definitely mention however that I would not have become a musician at all if it were not for my parents firmly and consistently attempting to discourage how much I played video games, COMBINED with their having the resources necessary to pull me out of public highschool (which was a COLOSSAL waste of time for an introverted person such as I...only extroverted people can benefit from public school...most public schools anyway). It was then that I began teaching myself guitar and piano....and I am ETERNALLY grateful to them (my parents for homeschooling me so I had the time to learn music on my own).

wow. a degree in computer science! that's sorta what i'm hoping my son will do. he's naturally talented and gifted for understanding this stuff really well even now. encouraged, too, by the fact that someone agrees about the addictive nature of computer gaming. it's fun - but you really have to control the urge if there's homework or other work. kudo's to your parents for gaining some knowledge of other types of schooling when one isn't working. we were very close to pulling our son out - but he seems to really need the socializing because he doesn't want to 'put himself out' naturally. this past year has been a turning point. perhaps kids aren't teasing him anymore, either, as it seems to have hurt him in the past (regarding not being exactly like his sister - the straight A person). he's interested in studying only what he's interested in learning. he's kinda stubborn - but very smart. thankfully, things are looking up for him! he's getting more into his homework again and asking his dad for help on the math - which we used to wonder 'where's the homework?'

That's precisely why I was taken out of public highschool, I was teased a lot, and did not have the extroverted initiative required to get good grades in a system which does not care about "no child left behind" as it pretends to. Haha, my dad helps me with math even now in college. He's a math professor so he's able to help with intense college math.

you'll probably surprise your peers and actually leave a few in the dust. it's a good feeling to excel in college when you're kinda mediocre in highschool. i was that way -but only in music. i'm still terrible at math. i think i only learned algebra I and II and a bit of physics 101. my husband has a degree in physics. he is a good help to my son and daughter but explains things the 'long way.' the teachers at school explain it in half the time - my daughter says. but, they listen to his way, too.

that's even worse. i mean, mindless really. why didn't they steal a car instead of shoot someone over a game. money can be had easier ways. i think. i've never stolen a car so i can't verify it.

In my opinion you should play 1 hour of games a day. Whats the use of always doing homework, study, or even piano. I say you need balance especially for 16 year olds.

amen dude. That's what I think. I'm gonna let my own kids (someday) have video games, I'm just not gonna let them overdo it. I'll try to encourage them to also do physical activities...don't want them to become couch potatoes.
