Need some help on a paper
on: November 21, 2006, 11:24:07 AM
Alright, so I have to write this paper for school about jazz in the 1900's, about its evolution, the different genres and all that. Can anyone tip me on a few good webpages where there might be some good information?

i'd start with gershwin, as he probably heard all the 'tin pan alley' stuff and added to it.  gershwin in my mind is son of the great duke elllington.  ella fitzgerald comes to mind. , too.  https://parlorsongs.com/insearch/tinpanalley/tinpanalley.asp

i happen to think there was another tin pan alley in the south, too - and one from whom we derive the 'african rhythms' and sauciness that jazz never would have had unless given that 'spark.'  places like alabama/mississippi - where some of the composers resided.  here's a list of tin pan alley composers:
www.parlorsongs.com/bios/composersbios.asp

around the 40's?  latin american sounds were added to the jazz mixture.  louisiana perhaps had them all along - but they became more published?

before elvis - we had the blues - too -which influenced some of the way jazz and rock music is written.  explaination here:  www.history-of-rock.com/blues.htm

i forgot, too, about big band  www.swingmusic.net/getready.html  here it mentions the origination of the jazz people used to hear on new orleans steamboats.  and, still can:

also, bebop  www.vervemusicgroup.com/history.aspx?hid=20
