zheer, what do you think classical music is?

It is not defined by instrumentation, only form and artistic intent, if anything at all.

I always hated this song. Even before I started listening to music. I do not understand why it was so popular. It is really totally bland and uninspired.

I also don't get which kind of classical influence this song has. When I read the title I kind of tried to figure out what would be 'behind the link'. When I quickly realised which song it was I was very suprised and confused.

Well I there I can't really make the connection between Coolio and Classical music, but in Pop Music, or at least Metal, there is a lot of classical music influence. Check out To-Mera's Parfum or Dream Theater's - Octavarium. Both have some very good, artistic use of classical music. They even include ornaments (heaven forbid the average person hears ornaments in everyday music!)

Hmmm , well the violin introduction like a basso continuo in barok music, also the chorus has a classical thing to it. Looks like am wrong  :-[.

Ok, sounds to me as a typical simple synth melody that is repeated over and over, very common in rap. The choir in the chorus is typical gospel influence.

Ok, of course all western music can be traced back to classical music.

Of course it can. Every music has its own tradition. Music doesn't pop out of nothing. It is build on other music.

Isn't folk music also classical music?

And, although it isn't what I meant, those kinds of music didn't exist in a vacuum either.

Of course not, but what I ment was the Norwegian folk fiddlers weren't influenced by Bach art of Fugue or something like that.

Don't Norwegian folk musicians have their own traditions? So that makes it classical music as well. That's what I meant to say. All modern music can be traced back to older styles of music, no matter the culture.

I mean, where does the monotome rap melody come from? What is the origin of the gospel choir?

Xenakis and other composers who compose music by working out mathematical formulae - do NOT have a tradition behind them.
