Rach 2. Cliched, I know, but I love it. The melodies, the immenseness of the piano writing, the passion, it's all there.

COMPLETLY AGREE.

Also, I love the Prokofiev #2(the rest are pretty good too), Both of Ravel and Chopin's, Rachmaninoff's other three concerti... all that good stuffums.  Some of the new age atonal-squealy stuff makes me cringe at times, but nonetheless intrests me to no end.

But NONE of them measure up the the greatness of the Rach 2.  NEVAH I SAY!!

Both by Brahms, Tschaikowsky's, any by Mozart.

And least favourite, just for variety, are both by Chopin and Khachaturian's. :P

I like Rach 2, but I think the climax of the 2nd movement (just before cadenza) is a little crass for my taste.

Ravel Concerto (in G) is nice BUT a substantial part of the music material is carried by the orchestra (particularly the harp part). Wouldn't this be less satisfying on the piano soloist's part?

I don't have an absolute favorite, but Moscheles no. 7 in C minor is a true masterpiece. It's stylistically more mature than the other six concertos of his.

By far Dvorak in G minor has the most satisfying conclusion of the 1st movement - it's also notable for sustained harmonic tension in unusual places, e.g., between exposition and development.

György Ligeti's Konzert für Klavier und Orchester which I had the depressing pleasure of watching Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Pierre Boulez, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra mangle last night.

did you know hamelin was asked to perform this in europe by the concertgebou orchestra (or whatever the orchestra is called) and he refused because the music didnt do anything for him, and then barenboim took up the job without even hearing the piece ever before? that's scary... imagine if they asked barenboim to play something like busoni concerto... if he accepted it he'd be in for a shock!
Just an interesting fact... i dont mean to say it's a bad piece, i like it myself...

Hm, maybe my englsih is extremely bad, and I don't understand. But do you know that Barenboim recorded the Bartok 1 in 1967?
