value detection moments
on: November 30, 2006, 07:59:34 AM
no big news, i do all kind of things while listening to classical music. don't we all?

now what i wanna share is this interesting, valuable little thing that i believe to be in itself artistically valid and productively consistent. this "thing", i dare say, is the most honest, work-under/subconcious self capacity to detect musical value.

how has it worked?

ok. it has been simpler than anything:

i do whatever work i wanna do while having a classical music in the background. i do my work as normally, i.e with the amount of concentration, effort, determination it needs. i do NOT invest any effort to try to listen to the background music.

and here is when the capacity to detect musical value starts:

1. suddenly i can't continue my work = bad performance or music
2. i do my work just fine = ok-fine performance or music
3. i HAVE to call my work off momentarily, and heed totally to the music, often in awe and wonder = marvelous performace or music

i first came to realize this strange happenings only by chance. but over the years, i find not only has it been very consistent and effortless, but now i have also trusted them as the most honest way to detect musical value.

i know we all have our own musical taste and judgement. mine has also developed over the years, and i am sure more decades of life experience will not do any harm. but anyway, that is not really i wanna say in this thread. rather the attached honesty, uncorrupted part of the whole process-in all and every moment of detection. i find it quite precious.

I have done this too, and have reached similar reactions as yours.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
