Question regarding technique and etudes....
on: November 30, 2006, 09:32:54 AM
Hello there,

I am currently quite baffled as to the answer to the question that i am about to ask, so any help and/or advice would be much appreciated.

I am currently learning 'La Campanella' (i know, not another one!)  ::) and have come to a dilemma revolving around the place where the chromatic section begins. Now, due to this being an etude, i first came to the assumption that the fingering of these chromatic parts should be numbered in a general way so that once perfected, my fingering for all other pieces involving chromaticism would be the same. I have read Chang's book too, in which he states that the easiest fingering would be that of 1234 1234 1234, involving the thumb on the black keys. This method specifically tackles the idea that no matter which scale you start on, the fingering will always remain the same, simplifying chromaticism altogether.

I assume that etudes were written so that they could assist in helping with technique, but Liszt's etudes are more like fleshed out pieces to me, and I'm not sure as to whether

a) i should be using specific fingering to assist me in playing the chromatic sections in his(or any) etudes or

b) to use a fingering like Chang's which does not depend on which chromatic scale you begin on, and makes chromaticism a general ease.

The only problem is that i find it easier to use a fingering of my own invention rather than Chang's on this particular piece.

I hope this all makes sense...

Again, any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks
 :)

you should find the fingering that you find the most comfortable for this specific piece. Even though you may not be able to use this fingering you come up with in another occasions because you cannot start at any key,so what? you are learning the technique for this piece.
