then i will drink hot chocolate when the weather dips below 50 degrees.  i'm trying to make the best of it.  actually, it did get a litte nippy today.  nothing compared to alaska, mind you.

say - if you and ahinton were here - i'd take you on a tour of these big old mansions in pennsylvania - and do a drive by of samuel barbers place.  maybe photocopy all the fingering that you might want from the west chester library (julliard prof's fingered it) - and then, eat a philly steak sandwich and root for the eagles.  even though i know not a single name on the team.

i do not like flying either - so thal, i'm afraid we're stuck at an impasse on this one.  but, i send you some snow in a little glass figurine - so when you are feeling lonely over x-mas, you can look at the snowman and the snow and wonder why you do not love me anymores.  and why henrah takes pictures of such provacative hearts.  pink ones.  instead of red ones - like prometheus suggested.  of course, if promethesu really wanted to - he could have a girlfriend.  but, like you - he probably dumps them before x-mas.  (sorry prometheus).  if he had one, that is.  but, finding them after x-mas is easy.  just go shopping again.  then you find the ones that know how to shop for bargains - and are a little money conscious.

peyote?  next thing you know - you'll want me to be the indian and you the pilgrim.  we're past thanksgiving and into the redneck holidays.  you have to have something stronger to watch everyone shop.  maybe something that makes you go into overdrive.  something like 'no sleep.'  of course, i don't even worry at this time of year.  everyone knows that i only send a present to grandma.  i can't afford this holiday anyways.  the best presents are homemade.  stuff some hotchocolate in a bag with some marshmallows and call it 'snowman soup.'  write a little poem to go with it.  just saved $50.

You got both "Helen" and "Carter" into this; do you think that Elliott might sue? - or do you hold to the rather more sensible view that he wouldn't give a flying carp about any of this (of which we all get tons daily in our spam folders and press the same buttons to flush it down the cybertoilet) and that you shouldn't give a flying carp either?...

Susan dear - "'tis" so sweet of you to worry, but why would you worry and why about me? Maybe you didn't pick up properly on my (admittedly fairly well selected) references within Thal's spammic illustration...

I really do appreciate your kind consideration (even if I do not understand its specific relevance to the present context), but do not, pray (no, I didn't write "do not pray" - for that would be more than my life - or another 50,00 of your words - would be worth) get too "pianistimotional" about it, Susan, ma chère...

Sam Barber!  That's right, you live in his former neck of the woods, don't you.  Do you know of the late Eleanor Steber?  The soprano who commissioned "Knoxville" from Sam?  She was an old friend of my parents and used to tell me great tales about ole Sam, Menotti and Tommy Schippers.  Phew.  What a crew!

And didn't the late Anna Moffo hail from your neck of the woods, too?

You should conduct tours, pianistimo.  I'd sign up.  But I insist on seeing that lawn of yours with patched holes and all that Papist decoration.  Cardinals, indeed!

And the now 95-year-old Menotti has for some years lived in some strange and remote country known (to those who know it at all) as "Scotland". Since your post concerns Barber and refers to Menotti, it may, incidentally, be worth mentioning that, in addition to composing his own stage works, Menotti also wrote the libretti to Barber's operas Vanessa and A Hand of Bridge (of which the latter is not, by the way, about another composer, in the manner [for example] of Pfitzner's opera Palestrina)...

You really get spam like this Over There?  Is it a UK-cyber thing?  Never seen anything like this.  I just get stuff from Russian women looking for a husband.  One, after she made her pitch, signed off with the name, "Slut Marina."  Natually, I first thought this was her location, you know, some kind of erotic yacht club.  Nope, that's her name.  Delete.

Dunno where it comes from, but i get sometimes 6 per day.

Usually it includes some stock market investment advice.

If only i could find out where it came from, i would bomb the place. My good old Norton always picks it up, but it is still irritating.

I wish i could filter out some of the spam on here. ;D

Menotti in Scotland!  Well, AH, there goes the neighborhood.  Thanks for reminding me of his duties as librettist.  I'd forgotten all about "Hand of Bridge," and only just NOW got your reference to "Palestrina," that "other opera about a composer!"  Ingenious!!  Incidentally, I'm a great fan of Frank's music.

Incidentally, I'm a great fan of Frank's music.
You and I both, then; less a case of "A Bridge Too Far" than one of "A Bridge Not Far Enough". Whilst Frank Bridge is far better represented on disc now than was the case, say, 20 years ago, I still cannot help but harbour a feeling that he remains rather under-appreciated. To take one work alone - his Second Piano Trio is, to my mind, one of the truly great masterpieces for the medium, worthy of the most serious consideration alongside the Beethoven E flat (Op. 70 No. 2)and "Archduke" trios, the Tchaikovsky, the Brahms C major and the Ravel...

I couldn't agree more.  And Pfitzner is another favorite of mine:  "Das dunkle Reich," the Piano Trio in F Major and, yes, "Palestrina."  I would love to hear a truly great recording of the Piano Concerto, as well.  Might you know of one?  AND, Bridge's sonata for cello and piano.  One of my great pleasures!

my snowman had a love child about 1/2 an hour a go.  i happened to see that movie 'frosty the snowman' and realized they actually eloped instead of married or something - because they had to wait until june.  so, there's already a jr snowman on the sled.  the senior snowman wouldn't let me break his legs.  he was a standing snowman and i wanted him to sit on the sled that i had out front.  but, being that my daughter couldn't stand to see me break a snowman's legs - i had to acquiese and just stand him upright behind the sled.  so, that's why we had to go get the love child to put into the sled.  he's really cute.  he has a blue hat and blue scarf and pink cheeks and carrot nose.   i suppose now - i'll have to go back tommorrow and get 'marina.'  she'll be wearing black stockings and standing on the corner of the driveway waiting for them to sled by when the snow comes.  hmm.  now that i think about it - i need the parson who marries them - bible in hand somewhere on the lawn.

*don't blame me!  i didn't write the script for 'frosty the snowman.'
