oriental composers/compositions
on: December 09, 2006, 05:14:43 AM
Looking to try something new and different in respect to a oriental composition that is moderately advanced. Does anyone know of any noteworthy oriental composers that I could look into? I am guessing that I am thinking of more modern pieces that still infuse that traditional flare that is so unique and different to the culture. I just refreshed myself by listening to Yundi Li's performance of Sunflowers. Music like that appeals to me, but I would like to play something that is not nearly as difficult.  :D

sunflowers is not difficult.. in fact, i'll say that it is quite sight-readable due to complete tonality and lack of complex rhythmss.

by oriental, do you mean chinese-like compositions or would any Asian composition do? I can recommend some Filipino pieces, both traditional and modern, if you're interested. I think crazy for ivan plays a splendid repertoire of Filipino pieces as well.

 Dear Ryan:
In my modest and ocidental opinion, the greatest asian composer is Toru Takemitsu.
 Best!

after finding the sheet music and taking a look at it, I do agree with you. Getting those trills right might be challenging, but I undertsand where your coming from.

I am open to anything and would gladly like to hear your suggestions.  :D There are many styles I have yet to experience. At the same time, I think that I was oiriginally gearing my question towards Chinese style. Nevertheless, I would love to hear some Filipino music. Maybe it is what I have been looking for  ;D

wow. Takemitsu's compositions are so breathtaking. I really liked the Waltz and the "A flock descends into the pentagonal garden" His piano compositions seem a little to awkward to me. Maybe I am thinkg about something more traditional sounding. Still, I think I need to add him to my CD collection  ;)
