Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum
on: December 11, 2006, 06:35:51 AM
Not the Tausig abridged version, but the real thing.  Horowitz, for example, plays some very nice slow stuff out of it.

The inspiration came from teh excellent Fitzwilliam post of our hero Thal.  That collection is indeed quite large.  Will make a reading plan to get through it in one year, even if just reading.

A division, such a powerful organizer.
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)

Milking cows is better exercise for the fingers.

Look, you do not need this.

Read Bernhard and Chang. Sit on your bum and become a great pianist.

Bernhard and Chang are the lamest ppl ever.

Get an excellent teacher.

Beethoven had great respect for Gradus Ad Parnassum, by the way.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Completely true ! I mean come on, Michelangeli assigned his students to play the Gradus - and as we all of course know, he did not know as much about the piano as Bernhard and Chang (who suprisingly seem to have disappeared from the forum - what a loss !  ::))

I love this place.

You only have to mention exercises and an interesting debate starts.

Anyway, i am off to play some Hanon.

How delightful.  There seems to be some real music here, and I see Maestro Mugellini had a little bit of Godowsky and Brahms in him.  ;)

Thanks Thal.  I'll express my gratitude by pointing out to you Book I, Op. 44 # 14 (page 54 of your first pdf).  Perhaps even better played with its three companion piece (dunno yet).

I wonder whether Hanon has anything pretty like this.  Food for research.

Hanon did write some other pieces for piano.

Out of interest, i have ordered a couple from the British Library.
