Finger release
on: December 13, 2006, 10:05:24 PM
Hi guys, I'd like your help on something please.

I'm wasn't sure what to search for so apologies if this has already been discussed before.

I've recently noticed what I think may be a problem with my technique. I've noticed that when releasing a note the finger that has played that note lifts off that note and then rests back on it when the note has moved fully back up to the top. The result seems to be uneven tone in the sense that if that note is played again shortly after it has been released there is something of an accent there and I think it may also be causing a problem with faster passages.

As an example if with the left hand I play A with 3, Bb with 2 then C with 1 as I release Bb and go to play C rather than 2 resting on Bb as Bb is released back to the top of it's motion it lifts off by a centimetre or so then rests back on when it's sprung back to the top. I think this is perhaps a sign of slight tension in my hand.

Is this a problem any of you have experienced and any advice as to whether it's a major problem? Or should it be something that I should embrace (ie learn to use it for ff play but also to get rid of it for softer passages)?

Cheers in advance for any tips, pointers or advice.

Nick

Find C.C. Chang's book on piano practice and read about parallel sets. https://members.aol.com/chang8828/
You'll very quickly learn to play  A Bb C with more speed and control than you ever thought was possible.
