Political Correctness
on: December 18, 2006, 02:55:38 PM
What value do you think PC has for Western culture?

I personally think that, while it is well-intentioned, it has gotten to the point where it has set limits on thought.

I'm specifically reminded of the case of a Harvard Administrator who was severely criticized for noting that there were fewer female mathmeticians than male mathmenticians and suggesting that men and women have different intellectual strengths.

He was called a sexist, but I think that is ridiculously unfair. If it is a fact that there are fewer female mathmeticians, are we supposed to pretend it's not just to remain within the bounds of political correctness?

Maybe just fewer women want to become mathematicians, rather than can be mathematicians?

Maybe they'd rather be pianists?  Or cooks or artists (all of which are mathematical skills)  8)
Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.

In that case, why do fewer women want  to become mathmeticians?

Notice also that there are fewer famous female pianists than male pianists.....
