Chopin Sonata No.2 Vs No.3
on: December 19, 2006, 03:30:10 AM
Just courious which one you guys like the most?

For a single movement, I personally like the finale of No.3 . And it motivated me to learned the whole sonata no.3
But sonata as a whole, I begin to think no.2 is more well connected, dramatic, and the finale is just a great great ending.
What do you think ?

P.S. Sorry for my bad english ..

I used to prefer no.2 before but now I am certain that no.3 is much better and a much more mature and deep work. It is a work in which all movements are just as superb as each other. And the connection is great between the four movements, add to that the wonderful finale.

Off course both are masterpiece.

But no .2 if easy to make analogy ( I don't know how to say) like:
mvt1: life from middle but not so good life - sick like cancer etc.
mvt2: the cancer is attacking-> getting worse -> dead
mvt3: funeral
mvt4: life after death --> chaotic, mistery etc.

For No.3 I only can put :
mvt1: ?
mvt2: ?
mvt3: peacefull moment
mvt4: war

Or is it about evolution of classical music (played in romantical way)? i.e:
mvt1: baroque
mvt2: classical
mvt3: romantic
mvt4: at that time Chopin just imaging the next ..

I don't know, and would like to hear any idea/thought/ knowlegde from people here ..

Btw pianowolfi, does it mean you're learning the 3rd?
Just becareful the moment that you will turn to hate that piece because sooo difficult .... I also sometimes still hate that 3rd  ;D

Well i have started to learn it. Long way ahead :P. To me the last movement is like the thoughts of an emperor who commands a huuuuuuuuge empire. He is really proud but really responsible too. And so he thinks about what he should be doing to reign best. He is actually in a struggle with himself, because he has reigned for a long time already and has doubts if he will be still able to reign responsibly in the future. He is very experienced and has also travelled a lot around the world. So he looks back on his long life and his experiences. He loves being an emperor and it is very hard for him to retire. But he tends to come to the conclusion that it might be the best for the world if he does retire.  :P Ok this is one of my stories about this. (The last movement is my favorite movement). I could find more. Maybe later. :)

3 is a much more mature work but I'd prefer the second one

Well for these movements I have no stories yet. If i get some later I will post them :)

Well and my story with the third sonata has just begun this fall. It will hopefully continue and stay as touching as it has begun. :)

That's one of the most ingenious pieces of the first half of 19th century and way ahead of Chopin's time.  :)

It is very logical in the context of this sonata. There is the funeral march and then the wind over the graves. I would not like to have a different ending there. Like a maestoso or bravour finale. It would not fit at all.

At the end a corpse hand reaches out from the ground, a la Carrie.
