Greetings.

Have you had a teacher? Because in either case it is best with one. Far too many things to keep track of that can hinder playing. A teacher notices these things and offers suggestions for improvement. Even if you do take suggestions from method books and advice of other people, these culprits of bad technique are still occurring despite your efforts to correct them. Again, a teacher is best.

Do you have any specific questions or concerns. There are many many facets to playing freely, and in my opinion, being relaxed is a crucial one. Try to nail it down to specific points so that I or someone else can offer suggestions.

Well, if you are asking me if I have a teacher or not, I do have a teacher.

If you really do want to learn without a teacher, then I suppose there are many books by acclaimed teachers that offer advice. I don't know enough books to be of much help here, but I am sure there are other members that are in the same position as you who know a book or two that works.

If there is really no possibility to get a teacher, you can find a lot of info on the internet
https://www.8notes.com/ has a pretty instructive course, and I'm sure you would find several others if you use google.
There are also several books that might help, do a search and you'll find bernhard's posts on it.
BUT... I must strongly discourage you from learning without a teacher, I have done it for about 12 or 14 years and I got A LOT of weird and annoying movements into my fingers that I later fought to correct. Correcting them is like trying to walk differently or learning to write with your bad hand... If you learn the right things from the start it is a lot easier than trying to correct the wrong ones when your fingers are already used to them. You can trust me on that.
Self-learning is painful, frustrating and very very slow, if you have a teacher, you have someone that can guide you and point out your mistakes before they get to be a part of you. It is the best way to go.

 Dear Princess:
 If you are one in a million, you are able to learn correctly to play without a teacher. However, taken for granted that's not the case, you must have one. The basic problem is that you probably don't know yet how the things might sound, and thus, it's impossible to explore the piano to find out how to get there.
 Anyway, if this someone that helps you gives you some actually good advice, it's better than nothing, since you follow this strictly. Another problem: in the begginings, you have so many things to consider that something always is beyond your control. In that sense, let me please advice you about the steps of good practice, in my humble opinion:
 - first of all, think of fluency, that is, you have to play the correct note at the correct time with the correct finger. Then, you shall consider your movements, your fingers-hand-forearm-arm-shoulder position and "stiffnessless" (actually, you have to feel your muscles at work);
 - the second step is touch and sound. Here is a main problem if you don't have neither a huge musical background nor a teacher, because you must know what is the music musically speaking. This is a very neglected part, and a most important one, because it's when you will shape your very "piano voice", so to speak;
 - third: power! The strenght and the control of it: the possibility of break some glass with your sound.  ;D In the other hand, the possibility of playing as soft as a whisper. Here we have a serious concern: heavy playing + wrong technique = injury!
 - last-but-not-least-but-last: speed. Yeap... sometime you have to consider it. The piano repertoire have lots of music that requires fast scales, very fast arpeggi, ridiculous fast octaves, and so on. Again, fast playing and wrong technique are fatal to your muscular apparatus.
 So, I hope that brief consideration shall help you a bit. In my most sincere opinion, I think you can play without a teacher but don't expect nor try to hurry in your progress: take a piece, play it for your leisure, think about what your friend says, take in account what people write in the forum. Specially, don't play fast or loud yet. And as soon as possible, get a regular teacher!
 Best to you, and Happy New Year!
