i really need help on this technique
on: December 26, 2006, 07:28:02 AM
first i do not know the name of this kind of technique
i just started sight read the Rachmaninoff piano concerto No. 2
and the 2nd and 3rd movement has many of those..
fast repeating of left hand right hand..left/right/left/right/left/right
sometimes
left/right/right/left/right/right..
when i tend to play those fast..it gets uneven
n i always had this problem in many pieces so i tried to avoid playing any pieces that have this technique
but...i really want to play rach concerto
how can i practice to get over with this problem?

I have no idea what you mean. Could you give an example? Measure?

I think that he means the quasi trill pattern when, let's say, you play F-sharp and G over and over again with a staccato touch, F-sharp with LH and G with RH. Like a staccato trill.

You have it in Rach2 2nd movement, or Liszt HR2 for example.

You have it in Rach2 2nd movement, or Liszt HR2 for example.

And then Liszt, Rach., & others start adding chords to those alternating hands at presto tempos.

You just need to go SLOW when you start to practice those passages.
You could even try separating your hands by an octave in the very beginning to just concentrate on getting the rythyms  set in your head.

Have fun!

While this technique does demand co-ordination of both hands, and that is a part of it, the limitations of speed and endurance are ALWAYS with the weaker hand of the 2.

Theres one hand holding you back, usually the left, and simply - you need to develop it more.
