mendelssohn's piano trio op. 49
on: January 01, 2007, 05:01:17 PM
hey guys,

attached is an extract of the opening of the second movement... it would make my life much easier if one of you learned folks could suggest fingering for the grouped semiquavers. at first it seems obvious (the first three semiquavers can easily be played with fingers 2, 4 and 1 of the right hand, whilst the fifth finger holds the preceding f), but then it seems that the semiquavers may have to be executed by both the right and left hand... is this the case?
cheers,
casper.

p.s. sorry for the poor image quality; i couldn't be bothered to set up my scanner so i used a webcam instead. ;)

yes. but thats already marked in the score. me & my friends won £2300 in scotland playing this piece !! absolutely amazing - best trio ever written hands down. if u need exact fingerings PM me, but you should be able to work it out yourself if you have the facility to play the 1st movement.

lol i love it how the file is called men.jpg makes u wonder lmao

I would play it exactly as written: so all the notes written in the lower staff, take with the LH, so in the second bar you don't haev to suddenly change.

Fingering for the second bar:
RH: 3 1 4/2 3 1 4/2

The melodic line in eight notes is 3 4 3 4, and the sixteenth notes are 1 2 1 2.  Keep in mind the eight notes are not to be played legato.

From the sixteenth notes which fall to the left hand, you can shape an attractive counter-melody.

No. You have these composers called something like Tchaikovsky and Beethoven.

Mendelssohn C Minor Trio, not D minor, is the greatest ever. Tchaikovsky's is also great, but less amazing overall because of the Theme & Variations.

Tchaikovsky pretty much sucks as a composer yes, but his trio rocks. Why do the Theme+Variations make it less good?

Tchaikovsky does not suck as a composer (!) - he is just a weak composer for solo piano.  I suppose you think Dvorak and Sibelius are crappy composers too.  ::)

I think the first two movements and the coda of the Tchaikovsky are easily on par with the Mendelssohn, but the Variations in the Tchaikovsky are just not up to the same standard. Every second of the Mendelssohn C min is exciting...it's also an innovate piece in terms of writing for the piano.

tell you what does suck though. his 1st piano concerto (tchaikovsky that is).
how good is mendelssohns 1st concerto!!!! just not when katsaris plays it. lang lang is the best.

have you heard tchaiks dumka from scene rustique? i think opus 59. thats for solo piano & i like that piece.

but... greatest pieces ever written for solo piano are brahms op 117 - 119 . total genius
