Yes, he did, at least until he got his technique up to a certain level.

Actually he had an approach which is more profitable and fun than standard exercising - improvisational exercising.

Basically, working on a technique, he would improvise around with the technique, and gain the benefit of an exercise, while exploring improvisation at the same time.
