Maybe your first (assuming that it is English) needs a spot of polishing; I think that you meant "Are your second languages as bad as mine?"...

Apologies for pedantry, but it was you who asked the question...(!!)

English is one of my second languages and as far as I know, my English isn't that bad.

I can also speak German and a little bit French, but I don't use these languages as often as I use English. Dutch is my native language btw.  :)

i don't have a second language.  does that make you feel better?

i have variously attempted learning spanish, french, russian, and hebrew - but i end up learning the words and pronunciation and forget the meanings.  i mean, i can speak some sentences - but then have to ask - what did i just say?  or, you know - sit there with the dictionary and go word by word.

it's kinda funny - because at least i'm getting by with the kindergarteners song from dora called 'we are family.'  they switch into spanish every other sentence.  so instead of saying 'i got all my friends and me' - 'todos mis amigos y mi'   and 'sing' is 'canta.'  these little kindergarteners are at the age that when they hear the words and learn what they mean - they do remember everything.  imo, if you really want to learn a language  - learn it when you can remember everything that goes with it (ie meanings).

hebrew is a very interesting language.  there are sort of 'notes' that seem to go with the symbols.  i kind of like attempting to follow - but usually just go for the pronunciation.  it's like chinese to me, too.  i mean if i just stare at the symbols for a while - everything gets worse instead of better.  but, if i hear someone speaking it - i can start following along and see a pattern going on.

I don't have a second language, but I can order beer in a few. lol

Generally, English speaking people don't bother learning other languages because everybody else learns English, so we don't need to.

To me, anybody who can converse on this, or any other forum, and can be understood, deserves credit, wether or not their spelling and/or grammer are correct.

Then you are missing out because mastering a totally different language then your own gives great satisfaction and its lots of fun!

Yes, you're right. I was only saying what I feel to be true. I wish I had learnt another language, but as I'm now approaching 40 rapidly, I don't think it will ever happen.

I can get by in German, just - although I'm very rusty! Besides that, I have a little French and Latin. Oh, and I know the Greek alphabet, although I can't speak the language!

Of course not.

I suspect you are not so perfect yourself.

On what could you possibly base such a suspicion?  I don't claim to be perfect, it's the voices that tell me that I am  ;)

at school i am learning french and latin, i like french a little because oncce you know abit you can start sayin stuff, like when you know stuff on the piano, but i don't really like latin, i just make it loook like i am intersested so that the teacher thinks i am doing well, and cos i like her. I was thinking of painting eyes on my glasses but it wouldn't work for two reasons.

1. I can't draw.
2. I snore

I think that it contains English words (apart from the bit between brackets which I take to be SDCish, which is not a language with which I am familiar), but that alone doesn't necessarily make the whole sentence English; either way, it doesn't seem to possess a lot of meaning, as far as I can tell...

Strangely enough, my second language is much, much better than my first; I spoke only my parents' native language until I was about 3, at which point I started speaking English, which is currently the only language in which I am fluent :'(. Yes, I know-the stereotypical American idiot (not to say I agree with the stereotype, but it does exist).
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Or are we brilliant for making the rest of the world learn our language?

Besides learning french for a few years in school, that's about all I learned of spanish from a trip to Mexico.  What else would I need to know? ;D

My first language was Hungarian.  Then I learned Spanish.  Now, I speak English.  Along the way I learned a bit of Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and German.  The language of music is still my greatest challenge. :D

My second language is English and I think I'm quite proficient in it.

But not everyday :)
