new upright
on: January 10, 2007, 08:54:27 PM
howdy folks. Ive been playing on a crappy Kimball spinet for the past 3 years. My dad and I were looking into getting a new piano. We don't really have enough free space, nor enough money, for a top class grand piano. So we were looking into buying a nice quality upright for around $5,000. What would your people suggest?

Thanks 8)

Check out bluebookofpianos.com for prices.  Not the most current available but
it will give you a ballpark range.  As for brand names,  find one that you like the
sound and feel of.  People will try to steer you one way or another because of
their experiences,  don't listen.  I have read some glowing recommendations
on pianos that I don't really care for.  Advertising can and does work.  Please
only yourself.  Good luck.  Let us know what you have decided on and why.

I own a Yamaha U1 (had cost me 5000 Euro) and am very satisfied with it. As most of Yamahas pianos it has a relatively light touch, a warm and soft but full tone.

I think 1 Euro  today exchanges at 1.30US$  so that makes the 5000E$ = $6500. No negative connotations on the piano, just clarifying for those that think it's a 1-1 exchange. (It does fluctuate continuously)

For $5000 look at Every option, there are also some sweet Digitals for that price or less that emulate closely Acoustic Grands in touch and harmonics. Sample in person as many (acoustic & digital) as you can. Only decide afterwards when You feel comfortable w/ your research.

With all possible respect, i would never ever prefer a digital over a decent upright, that you surely can buy for 5000$. BTW you should check local piano-stores, i have no idea how much a Yamaha U1 cost in the US.

Didn't try to imply one over another.

Just mentioning that it's not a bad idea for one in the market to gather as much info as exits, and that includes both types of piano for that price range.

thanks guys. I'd never get a digital piano over a nice upright though. Me and my dad are considering getting a yamaha. We went to the piano shop and some of them were quite nice.
