I have a recording of this, will look it out. Is this not the piece that Raymond Lewenthal refused to record, saying he could not record music that he did not love?

I have 4 recordings of this (2 on cd and 2 on vinyl), none of which are very satisfying.

The best is the CD by Mayer where he recreates the piano battle between Liszt and Thalberg.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liszt-Versus-Thalberg-Franz/dp/B0000030SZ/sr=8-11/qid=1168696687/ref=sr_1_11/203-0247357-0970314?ie=UTF8&s=music

The Leslie howard CD did not impress me and my old records (Ponti I think) are even worse.

This forgotten piece desperately needs a new recording by someone who can inject some much needed fury.

Yes, I have the Mayer recording also - my memory is that I found his playing a bit dry, but that his Niobe was preferable to his Thalberg, where I definitely prefer Francesco Nicolosi and Roberto Cappello's recordings. Always struck me as a curious decision to recreate the duel between Liszt and Thalberg, and then stick on a "serious" piece like Benediction de Dieu as a filler..

I agree old chap.

His Liszt is better than his Thalberg.

For anyone who is remotely interested in what we are rattling on about, here are the sheets.

I did try to do a cleaner scan myself, but Editio Musica books are too thick.
