Musical people are better at everything
on: January 14, 2007, 04:36:48 PM
In whatever field I enter, any success is most often attributed to my first discipline - that of a pianist.

Musical people are said to learn new languages more easily. Aristotle said that the foundation for a political career is training in music. Music was once considered a science, and many musicians go on to careers in medicine or similar fields. Music is also creative, so musicians excel in artistic endeavors as well. Rhythm is necessary in many sports. Music takes centre stage in most social activities, and it improves the memory.

It appears that leaving a child musically illiterate would very damaging.

Or maybe all that musicians are really good at is self-promotion.

I disagree
I suck at drawing and painting... :P

Ok, more seriously now, I think music is helpful in a lot of things we face in everyday life, but the same can be said for most intellectual pursuits like chess, philosophy and science
If you use your brain in any way, it will develop and lower your limitations.
It's not the music that makes you smart, it's the curiosity, the learning and the constant use of your braincells.
Music is just one of the ways you can do that in my opinion

Chess, philosophy and science aren't nearly as accessible to children. Also, they don't seem to have the broad application over a wide variety of disciplines like music is said to have. Society gives musicians an enormous amount of credit.

maybe we know how to have fun?  lighten the mood?  go with the flow.  i mean - i'm organized and all - but also i can be the opposite and just not care much at times what happens.  to be able to be free like a bird - is kind of being able to just give everything up to the 'wind' and see where the wind or water is going.

of course - to be too rapturious would be extrememly bohemian life.  i don't think i could handle living hand to mouth every day.  i'm glad my husband is employed.

They were only examples
Chess is accessible to children, my sister is 7 years old and she already knows how to play to a basic level
Philosophy is not only accessible but it comes naturally to children, they do it ever since they gain the ability to think
Science can also be taught to children, I was dismantling my toy cars and trying to figure out how they worked long before I ever sat at a piano
They are not isolated disciplines, they are just examples of thought processes, each of them will help you in most of the others. What I was trying to say is that you should teach children to think, be it about music or about anything else

What you said about music developing memory and rythm is absolutely right, I just think music is not the only way to develop mental faculties
And I don't think musicians are better than anyone else
I think people who think and learn from what they find instead of complaining about it and giving up are usually brighter than most others

I'd say chess is accessible to children (speaking as somone who spent a significant part of their childhood playing chess competitively..). I'd argue (and many Russians would probably agree!) that childhood exposure to chess is an excellent way of training the mind vis-a-vis logical thinking.

It used to be said that there was a significant correlation regarding ability at chess, maths and music - that many people who were gifted in one were also gifted in another. For example: André Danican Philidor (one of the first chess champions of note and also a composer); Prokofiev and David Oistrakh (both chess players of approximately master standard); Dr John Nunn (chess grandmaster and mathematical prodigy).

That's mostly what I am trying (maybe awkwardly) to say, it doesn't really matter what you do as long as you do it, think about it and enjoy it
If you use your brain in one way, it will help you in all the other things you can do with it
It's thinking that's important...

I think the two fundamentally important things that anything like music, chess, dismantling toy cars, or whatever it is you do, are - one, you learn to learn (practise, research, concentration etc) and two, you do it in such a way that you find the end result is fun. If you can get into those habits early on, you almost automatically end up with an enquiring mind and the skills to learn to do whatever it is you're interested in.

They do say that playing piano (or any instrument) is one of the best things you can do to avoid health problems like Alzheimer's in later life, too, along with playing chess, doing crosswords, and similar things - the concentration and coordination required literally give your brain a workout and help keep it healthy. It's like any other part of your body, you have to give it exercise if you want it to work well and stay healthy.

heh.

I don't think musicians are better at everything. I just think it's interesting how much is attributed to musicality.  I don't think nearly as many things are attributed to chess, philosophy, or whatever other hobby you may take up. It's like being musical has a magical quality heightens the standards the world has for you.

Musical people are better at everything?

Let's change the statement a little bit:

Some musical people believe, they are better than everyone else   8)
If it doesn't work - try something different!

You can practise drawing. If you don't believe me, try it. Same as practising the piano, only it takes more time to catch on.

I believe you
It's just that it's never been in my interests, I  never enjoyed it much...
Maybe some day I'll come round to it
Or maybe not
There are so many interesting things to learn...

This doesn't make any sense at all. Just because you can play the piano doesn't mean that you more easily can do math eg. The only that matters is interest(which is why it's so important to learn pieces you only like). If you are interested in something you will eventually get good at it. If you are not...well why do you waste your time and energy on it then!

I believe all musical people believe they are better than everyone else, some just hide it really well.

Actually, I could simplify that more:  everybody believes they are better than everyone else.

Except me. I'm humble. I'm above that. I'm so good I don't have to brag.

You will pierce rythmically, spend months studying the exact perfect way to mix your drinks and make a sale at the cash register in 0,197 seconds
