Favourite places
on: January 16, 2007, 10:31:56 PM
Where are your favourite places to visit, and why? This dropped into my head after the 'I hate it when' thread veered off into architecture, mostly by me as it's one of my pet subjects...

I'm having a four-day weekend this weekend - hurrah for days off work! - and will be spending it in York (because it's lovely, especially at this time of year when it's quiet, and contains and number of places I have good associations with), indulging myself in various ways. Other places I love include:

Whitby (because it's undeveloped and the Abbey is lovely)

Glasgow (wonderful theatres and shops, and my favourite Chinese restaurant)

Churchill (polar bears)

Montreal (mostly because of the people)

most of Northumbria, especially the coast (for history, beauty, wildlife, exceptional public transport and friendly natives. Especially Warkworth (the best beach in the country), Lindisfarne, and Dunstanburgh.)

Finland (so many reasons! The people, the wildlife, and the memory of sitting in a hide at stupid o'clock in the morning and catching my breath as a bear wandered out of the mist)

the British Museum (because it's fascinating)

the British Library (mostly for the Lindisfarne gospels and the scores - things like Beethoven symphony no 9...)

the Pitt Rivers museum (it's mad - like an eccentric Victorian's attic, it's straight out of a Dickens novel)

the theatre I work in (so many reasons, mostly personal. But also because it's beautiful)

Me is taking a 3 month career break this year and will visit a lot of the places that i have grown to love. Here are some

1. The open air theatre on the clifftop in Cornwall - Me has forgotten the name ;D
2. Hangingstone Hill, Dartmoor - desolate, but beautiful.
3. Warminster - UFO's and top quality cider.
4. Avebury - biggest stone circle in UK - massive vibes
5. Bath - Visit Sorabi archive and Roman Baths.
6. Hay on Wye - whole town is one big bookshop.
7. Pen y Fan - great mountain, but regretfully in Wales
8. Wastwater in Lake District - serene beauty.
9. Sandwood Bay, Scotland - best beach in the World and nobody goes there
10. John o Groats - dump, but i am strangely drawn to it.

Me is also going to St Kilda and i am sure that will be one of my fave places.

pepper music store
west chester music library
cunningham pianos
audubon house - and oaks bicycle trail
various hiking trails (appalachian mountain trail)
chain mar furniture store - just go in and sit down on anything that looks comfy.
flea markets
kitchen stores

I like visiting castles.
Favourites; Tintagel, St. Michaels Mount, Corfe, Harlech, Kidwelly and The Tower of London. We toured Scotland a couple of years ago and went to so many I can't remember which ones. I like the thought of being somewhere where history was made.

And as Thal said, places like Avebury and Stone Henge really make you shiver.

Charleston Lake in Canada is an amazing place. I think it's near Montreal. Just Canada itself is brilliant, I love it :D

Devon's a great place too.

On top of those, just big parks and areas of green and trees are enough to please me. The University park(s) in Oxford are great for wandering around and taking in the beauty. One time I felt lost, outside of civilisation. I then found the road to KFC's and was back in reality, though not pleasant reality lol.

she never implied sharpshooting in any other post.  surprising things you find out about people on here.  just a slight bit disturbing about the part 'i like to go near my old elementary school.'  probably because a bunch of amish got shot around a school here.

I had a great time in Scotland, but there are more Scots in England.

You don't use all the land you already have. You have all those mountains that need civilising.

Sorry, we'll send some English up to do it for you. Again.  ;D  :D

They have more than enough. Caithness and Sutherland are amongst the most sparsely populated areas in Europe and long may they remain so.

Many of the islands that once supported a population are now devoid of humans as the old way of life is no longer viable.

Scotland has always been a magical place for me. I find myself constantly drawn to it. As soon as spring comes, i start to get itchy palms and the urge to drive to the highlands.

Liebesraum?  ::)

It is said of the British Empire that the English financed it, whilst the Scotch colonised, administered and defended it.  :)

I once had a gramaphone record called "I'm terribly, terribly Bristish" a patter by "Red Anders at the piano" that held the lines:

I often think of our far flung empire,
In fact, its a pity its been flung so far.
All over the world there are thousands of Scotsmen,
And two or three Englishmen
Sweating it out in sticky, unpleasant surroundings.
Imagine, places where its too hot to have even your own wife with you.

I think it was by Sorabji, but I might be wrong  8)

I wish I stil had that record  ;)
Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.

Lebensraum (not Liebestraum, either)...

Lots of things have been said about the British Empire, but the inhabitants of my country are Scots, whereas "Scotch" is one of its principal products.

Well, you know, I'm a rather old fashioned gal  ;)

One thing I didn't know, but now do (something's lost and something's gained, by living every day) is this:

Scotland was one of the first countries in the world to introduce compulsory education for all children in 1872 (England introduced it in 1880). The Scottish school system was placed under a "Scotch Education Department" with offices in London. In 1918, as a result of objections from within Scotland, the department was moved to Edinburgh and renamed the Scottish Education Department.
Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.

Where's that?

I like trees, anywhere with big trees.  Bonus points if I can climb them.

I like Lichristines criteria too, exploration!
