This piece has been pretty popular with transcribers.

Cher Thal,

Very many thanks for your posting of the various Wagner transcriptions here - especially that Wittgenstien one to which I have referred in various threads here (not always in a less than frivolous context, it has perhaps to be said).

Best,

I can't play it with 2 hands, let alone 1.

Have you or Mr Sorabji ever done anything with this melody?

No - although there happen to be occasional brief quotations, en passant, from elsewhere in Tristan und Isolde in my organ pieces Amatory Offertory (1990) and Offrande d'Amour (2002), as well as my Sinfonietta for orchestra (1997) and Concerto for 22 Insruments (1969/2000/2004-05).

There's some very interesting stuff here - I had never seen the Wittgenstein transcription before, though I was certainly aware of it.

Any chance of the Moszkowski Venusberg Baccanale paraphrase?

I'm just intrigued to look at it, as someone whose pianistic abilities I hold in high regard told me that it was seriously difficult.

Some pieces look harder on paper then they are.

I don't think this is one of them ;D

You just made me remember Strauss Metamorphosen.  Another wasted neuron.

{I should clarify, the wasted neuron is for making a connection between Thal's 23 instrument bon mot and Strauss variations on themes from Beethoven's Eroica, 2d mov.  I totally agree with Alistair that it is glorious music, even if it were true that it is a memorial for Hitler, which would make it conceptually despicable in my opinion.  Now that I think of it, it must be at least 24 wasted neurons.  Sorry, I digress}

? i thought it was bagpipes.  well, anyways, nose flutes probably sound better than saxophones.

i want to hear more stuff for the glass harmonica.

OK - understood.

Besides i am just adding in the "Algerian nose flute" part.
And that makes 24, yes? But why are you adding it only now - to a work which one may otherwise suppose you to have finished already?

Go blow your (Algerian) nose!

Well, you were wrong. Very wrong!

well, anyways, nose flutes probably sound better than saxophones.
No to me, they don't - not even if the nasal passages concerned are absolutely clear...

i want to hear more stuff for the glass harmonica.
You're changing the subject; there's no music for that in my concerto, that's for sure...

piano concerto?  i'm all ears.  don't disappoint me.  unless of course, it is for banjo.  thal might enjoy that.  i actually enjoy banjo and guitar picking.  my aunt and uncle play dulcimer.

say - here's a site for old car part instruments.  www.oddmusic.com/gallery/om06850.html  ignore the ads for thai nipple gongs below.  i think they're kind of indecent.

ps if i were picking a transcription (from that great list that thal gave) i'd pick the moszkowski version.

I thought it was a contemplatition on the war and the bombing of Dresden- the start is captures a lone figure standing outside a ruined church. (for me anyway).  And I thought Strauss only sided with the Nazi's to protect his wife, not that he actually 'followed' Hitler.
Gorgeous piece though.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Most famous work, the Adagio by Mozart. I think there are a few other minor works.
