I have never understood why American Football is so popular.

They seem to have an incredible amount of players and even more referees. Each bit of action lasts about 10 seconds, when there is either a commercial break or a group cuddle to work out what to do next.

The game is only supposed to be 1 hour long but seems to go on for about 3 days.

If i ever went to yankee land, i would much prefer to go and watch some baseball.

Non-americans generally can't seem to stand the pauses every 10 seconds.

Amen.

Go do a bad karma "light's out" dance.

Go surrender the biggest comeback in Championship Game history.

Go interception in the last :30.

Go home Patriots.

Go Colts.

yeah, it's far more entertaining to watch a group of 12 fairies run around kicking a ball and crying when they get tripped up.

Real men watch Football, pre pubescent girls watch soccer.

Actually, there are only 11 fairies on each side

the concept of "real men" is an American invention.  I think the rest of the world would disagree with it.

Besides, soccer is a much more demanding game.  Have you ever seen a 300-pound Swedish sweeper?  Not happening.  Running nonstop for 90 minutes is something football players could never dream of doing.

Bad idea comparing football to soccer. Soccer is a game of fluidity, almost like a improvisation. Football the opposite, every move is thought of in advance. Either way they are both extemely demanding sports. Soccer is the easier game to pick up though, as you are more likely to survive running until your exhausted than facing off against a 300 pound lineman. There is a reason they wear pads you know.  Soccer is a great game to watch, but it dosent have the same kind of quality that watching football has, football last longer, it takes its time.

And yes, many football players can run for 90 minuets, they may not be able to run as fast a soccer player, but they can run damm well fast sprints. The thing is, in football unlike soccer, you have to have a lot of muscle, something that soccer players dont even stand up to in that respect.

I often wondered why, if American Football Players are so tough, why do they have to wear so much pansy padding.  ::)  Also, why do they call it footbal when they hardly ever kick it?  ;D

In football/soccer many players need to act like 'quarterbacks'. It is a game of skill, instinct, talent, improvisation, like you say. I though quarterbacks were the most favored and popular players.

American football is more about tactics and plays. Of course for some players it is physically more demanding. But what does that matter?

I don't see why watching american football has more quality. Is it somehow more 'epic'?

Many american football players, depending on their position, are 'overweight' either with muscle or with fat.

I don't see why these people can run for 90 minutes. They make a 10 second play and then they can rest for quite some seconds. They only have to be on the pitch one part of the match. And if they get tired after some plays in a row they can take a break.

These people must have mostly 'fast twitch' muscles. Running for 90 minutes takes slow twitch muscles. Also, running for 90 minutes will be about 20 kilometers.

It is not about how many muscles you have. Just look at iron man athletes. I wonder if a team of iron man athletes will beat a team of body builders in both football and american football.

The only reason people compare soccer and football is the name thing.  The games are completely different.  Soccer is much closer to basketball.  I really think if you got rid of basketball in America, there'd be a lot more soccer fans.  Of course, as a red-blooded American, I'd never give up basketball for soccer.

Football is more strategic than any other sport around, which is what necessitates the breaks.  To enjoy football at all you need to have a basic knowledge of the rules, which are much more complex than other sports.  And it becomes more enjoyable the more you know, to an extent much greater than the more fluid games.

Shortyshort, if your team is bad enough, there's plenty of kicking in the game. :)

Prometheus, anyone who watched the Boise St. v Oklahoma game this year, knows that Football is in fact more epic.

My soccer coach's playing career was ended because someone slidetackled him from behind and broke his neck.  He was in the hospital for three days unconscious, and when he woke up he didn't know who or where he was.

Watching football is excruciatingly boring to me. It’s like hearing a zillion similar variations of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. If you watched one game, you’ve seen them all.  ::) Boring.

At least in Baseball all the players get a chance to bat, field the ball, and actually have an interesting part in the game. In football you have many players that do nothing more than support the players that are having all the fun (boring fun).

Actually I dislike all organized sports. Boring, boring, and boring.

And don’t tell me I don’t understand what’s going on in the game. Any monkey can understand this juvenile behavior.

As someone who has actually played football, I can assure you that when you have a guy who can run a 4.1 40 going full speed collides with someone who is 240 pounds of pure muscle, the pads really don't make it feel like someone is tickling you.

I can see how football can be seen as more epic. It's kind of a double edged sword. Some people say that Lord of the Rings is boring. Others think it is epic for the same reasons.

The only think broadcasted here is the superbowl. The game you talk about is not even NFL, right?

I will probably be one of the few Europeans watching and understanding the rules. But like I said it's probably not knowing the rules that ticks off most people. It the flow of the game, with all the pauses.
And I would even rate the american arrogance about their own sports as the second biggest reasons.

As someone who has played Rugby against Blackheath and the Met Police Force, I would assume that not having any protection at all, must be worse.

In addition, there are long periods of open play. It is not just 3 seconds of effort and then back to the sidelines for a massage.

This, from my Sports Illustrated today:

Quote
Reported, by a forensic pathologist that the suicide of former Eagles defensive back Andre Waters was most likely caused by brain damage sustained on the field.  Waters was 44 when he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in November.  Last week The New York Times reported that Dr. Bennet Omalu, a neuropathologist at the University of Pittsburgh, examined Waters's brain and found that the tissue was consistent with an 85-year-old man in the early stages of Alzheimer's.  Omalu said that blows to the head -- Waters suffered multiple concussions during his 12-year NFL career -- contributed to the brain damage "no matter how you look at it, distort it, bend it."

And, a couple weeks ago, Rick Reilly wrote a piece about how the people complaining about Tiki Barber's decision to retire are ignoring the fact that most of these football players who have long careers can barely walk by the time they hit fifty.

Point?  While soccer and football both are tough physical games, football has the bigger, more serious long-term effect.

No.  I'm saying that while football is considered to be a more "manly" sport by some of the people here, is it really more manly to destroy your mind and body for the sake of the game?

Isn't that kind of sexist? To say that it is many to destroy your mind and body for the sake of a game? I mean, isn't manlyness to be a virtue to every male?

Ok ok, I am kind of metrosexual but doesn't this go a bit too far?
