hello Again.. from Kurdistan- iraq
on: January 23, 2007, 06:42:19 PM
Hello.. you might remember me.. I'm Boran.. (the hopeless pianist).. but i'm not anymore( iguess)

last time when I send you somthing was when my institute started>> that was about 2 and a half or 3 months ago...

3 monthes ago.. I was like this: just bought a piano after playing small keybored for a few years. & feel lost when I look at pianos 88 kyes!! and had no piano teacher!!! i knew nothing about scales or Hanon!! I played some classical pieces on keybord!!

but.. here what happened during this 3 months:

I found a grat piano teacher.. probebly the best Pianist in Iraq!!!!!!! started teaching me in the institute.. during this 3 monthes I played 18 Hanon from (the Virtuoso Pianist) (i'll start no.19 tomorrow).. I played 12 scales.. I'm now working on chopin's Nocturne op.72 no.1.. and I finished another piesis (mindellson.. beethoven.. etc) & I'm working on Czec Etude book (Album Etude) the year (V.)  ( is that 7 or something??)it's a little hard but i'm working on it..
I practice 4-5 hours a day( I can't practice more b-coz there is no electrisity) on my clp 230 Clavinova.. by the way I'm 15 years old, I'm a student in the fine arts institute where I study music, I'll study there for 5 years then go to fine arts college I hope.. so my quistion is:

is that a good improvement in 3 months?? do I have a future?? please tell me what you think!!!  & thank you all..

& sorry my english isn't that good   :-[

You bet
Great improvement !
Also you've something that not many piano students have ... musically and artistically I mean. You already played piano before you had a teacher. You (probably using your ear) played pieces you knew. Well now that you're paring this skill with a good piano technique and theory foundation building you can expect great things to come
And yes you have a future and your path suggests there's a strong artistic essence within you so I'm pretty sure the career you chose will allow you to progress a lot and become a great musician

Hanon is not very loved here
The reason is the repetitive pattern that goes on for 15 bars on one direction and 15 bars in the opposite direction. But the small patter per se (the one you have in a single bar) is not bad per se and it's the kind of pattern you find or would practice in real pieces or sonatas
So my suggestion is to focus more on the pattern rather than the study as a whole.
Be concerned with playing the pattern of each piece with ease of movement and accuracy but don't worry if your stamina collapses after 5 bars.

Also remember to pay attention to the alignment of your body and arms while you play at the piano in order to avoid hands injury and the annoying tendonitis and back pain
Find the correct heigh of the bench and the correct distance. Find the correct level of relaxation and muscular contraction and AVOID any kind of tension (co-contraction)

Way to go Boran !  ;)

Am more than happy for you, i did'nt wont to tell you on your previous thread, that not  having a piano teacher is a serious disadvantage. Anyway you have obviously made  massive progress with you piano playing, wishing you luck.
Recently i had the fortune to have a number of piano lessons with a well known piano proffesor and  concert pianist here in London, she almost made me cut my own wrist when she made me realize how little i know about piano playing.
   Wishing you the very best.

great job boran what an improvment in 3 months!

I think you definatly have a future. 15 years old, playing chopin 72/1 and a  bunch of other stuff. Why dont you look ahead 5 years and think about what pieces youll be playing in 5 years. Youll be quite surprised

keep going you definatly have somthing going!

Nothing wrong with Hanon - it builds a good reliable technique.. your teacher has his head screwed on - Hes Good. Keep working hard for him and always be listening carefully when yo practice. Its not the number of hours that are important but the quality of the practice that yo do. Listen carefully to every sound you make and be very analytical of you finger and hand movements that they are extremely efficient and that they are reliable - ie you can play that bar perfectly accurately and with stunning sound min 5 times.  In your Chopin spend lots of time on your LH  rehearsing the movements so they are PERFECT and so that you can play it without watching your hand atall for the jumps! Then concentrate on a super legato - beautifull RH and you will please your teacher no end.
