You can choose more than one option.

You didn't create the poll properly. You can't select more than one.

What a poll! ;D

birthdays are somewhat sacred things to me, I like to always make some sort of effort for peoples birthday.  It's like saying "I'm glad you were born", to not do something for a friends birthday is like saying I don't care.

Most of my friends are partiers, so I like to do a shot of tequila with them...  or if they don't like tequila, Jack Daniels.  We can share a nasty drink and a sour face.  That's friendship.

Otherwise, I'd prefer to just have some lunch with them.  Chat it up, chow on a sandwich, plan of future adventures...  Scare most of the other patrons in the restaurant away with loud inappropriate comments.

Well if I have a true friend I somehow think every day: I am glad you were born. I am glad you exist. Even if someone is not very close to me I principally think so. And I don't want this to be limited to one day of the year. But nevertheless birthdays are pretty important. One of my everlasting resolutions is to keep a list of the birthdays of all my students. I have such a list. But i think it is not quite up to date :P.

I do whatever I feel would make the person happy.

which is it?  do you know him well or you don't know him well?  you should tell us - because then we can at least get 1/2 the question right.

ok.  if you know him well - get more and more personal as the years go on.  for instance - sometimes it isn't even a gift.  it might be just going out all day with them and randomly hitting the town.  spending time together is probably the best gift of all because there's so little of it.  if you buy something for them - make it a tandem gift.  say, two pairs of skates or skiis or whatever.  or a dual membership for the gym.  our best times together are doing things (anything) without the children for a few moments (or a full day - as now we have a teenager who can babysit).

if you don't know him well - send him a card and be done with it.  why embarrass yourself?  i mean- you get him a toaster and he might be thinking something else.  putting hidden meanings to it.  maybe a bottle of something or other if he drinks.  or, a gift card to restaurant for two.  let him decide who he's taking.  just bide your time.  likely that a girl who remembers his birthday will remember her, too.  but, don't make it an important thing to dwell on.  i mean- there's a million guys out there.  and look how young you are.  someone is bound to take your breath away - and not make you work very hard for it.
