Need suggestions for Romantic piece
on: January 29, 2007, 01:42:38 AM
Hi all, I just recently finished Rachmaninoff's 3/2 and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (3rd mov't).
I was wondering what piece I should be starting, and I prefer Romantic ones. Is the Rachmaninoff 23/5 too difficult? I was also thinking about something by Liszt. I've done a few Chopin nocturnes as well, so if you recommend something by Chopin please don't make it a nocturne. Thanks, I will appreciate all suggestions. By the way my hand reach is about an octave (plus one is OK, but octave + 2 is stretching it)

Dear Silyaznfoo:
Chopin is a difficult task to suggest, because it's normal to hear anything by him. There are the dances: mazurkas, valses, polonaises. Something about 80 pieces, that spam from easy to hard. Maybe it's not the time yet, but put into your horizon some major work (ballades and scherzi).
There are the preludes, a marvelous world of moods. If you want my "vote", do some of them (also they are a great contrast to the nocturnes). Other mainstream suggestion would be an Etude.
About Liszt it's even hard to choose, but why not some pieces of his Ančes de Pelerinage?
The Rachmaninoff it's not a big fight since you played this particular Beethoven.
Some ideas that might be useful (an idiossincratic
scelta
, as usual):
Field - Nocturnes
Schubert - Impromptus
Mendelssohn - Lieder ohne Worte
MacDowell - any selection of his cycles
Brahms - selections of his Klaviertucke (opp. 116-119)
Faurč - Nocturnes, Barcarolles, Impromptus
Granados - Danzas Espanolas
Albeniz - selections of his Suite Espagnola 1 (or another set)
Tchaikovsky - selections of the Seasons
If you need some further information about any of them, please let me know.
Best, and good research!

What about Schumann, for example the Waldszenen? They are of intermediate diffculty but very beautiful, especially as a whole.
And maybe listen to all of the Rachmaninoff preludes, the 23/5 is very tempting i know, but everybody plays 3/2 and 23/5 and there are so many others which deserve our attention.

You could try Rach. prelude op.16/5, or Brahms intermezzi op. 116/4 & 6. hope you like them

desordre's suggestions are pretty good, but i would emphasise learning a chopin etude or two. seeing as you have learned Moonlight 3rd mvmt, you should be able to pull off some of the Chopets. learning these will further your technique and are great pieces to play.

Look at Grieg, Op. 73, "Moods".
