Steinway Grand-best years???
on: January 29, 2007, 08:24:37 PM
Hey everyone!
I'm interested in getting a Steinway Grand of some sort for a studio that is being built. I have been doing some research and think that a Music Room Grand would probably be appropriate for our needs (if I'm wrong please let me know). Here is my question- are there any particular years where these pianos really popped? I really want to know any good years of Grads in general...not just the Music Room series. Any information anyone has would be so so so helpful. Unfortunately pianos is not an area of expertise of mine so I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks!!

Personally I haven't found any of the smaller models appealing (S, M, or L). Considering the price you can get a larger instrument (different brand) for less money and better bass response.
If I were to have money to buy a Steinway I would only consider the A, B, or C for my house. I have played some of the new model O and I like them. Seeing you are getting a piano for some sort of studio, the larger Steinway's would be beneficial as recording would pick up all the nuances these pianos have to offer.
If you are going to spend that much money on a piano, you might as well buy the Steinway models that offer their best performance. IMO, the S, M or L do not offer optimal performance compared to other Steinway models.
If you like the Steinway sound you might want to check out Kawai (they manufacture Steinway's Boston piano line).
You may also want to check out Mason & Hamelin or Petrof, or many other brands available.
If you want a good piano, judge by sound and feel and not by name. Don't just get a Steinway because it is so. (Unless you are wanting it for the prestige factor)

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
