Does anyone have this piece? I'm not even sure that it is out of copyright? By the way, how long is a copyright?

Gershwin died 1937, so his works are not in copyright.

I can't give you the grainger as he died 1961.

thanks so much. i want some good gershwin pieces to play. i really like the smooth feel of summertime (when it's played slow, it feels amazing) and love walked in. can anyone suggest some good pieces/songs (doesn't even have to be gershwin) to play?

For a recording of the best of the Songbook and the Preludes and a few other bits and pieces (although, oddly, not Summertime), you could do a lot worse than Richard Rodney Bennett's Gershwin 'Piano Works' CD on the IMP label. It's quite hard to get hold of I think, but it's a cracking recording and a good introduction to Gershwin's piano music besides the orchestral works.

Make sure you don't play Summertime too slow though, those long melodic lines are gorgeous but remember it's supposed to be being sung by a soprano up there on those nasty high notes, and if you take it too slow she'll turn blue in the face and pass out... Now there's a swine of a song to have to open an opera with, when you're not even a leading character! I have tremendous respect for anyone who can sing this properly...

I'm probably going to start working on Prelude no 2 when I have time to give my attention to a new piece, it's lovely... a blues lullaby, so Gershwin called it. And of course you can't go far wrong with 'I got rhythm' for something lively. One of my favourites is 'Rialto Ripples', it also doubles as a song called 'The Real American Folk Song (Is A Rag)' in one of the musicals... 'Girl Crazy', if memory serves. I seem to remember hearing a good arrangement of 'An American in Paris', although who arranged it escapes me, if you fancy something on a larger scale without going for the Rhapsodies or Concerto, and there must be arrangements of 'Porgy and Bess' around.

I always think Gershwin's music is rather underrated by 'serious' musicians. Maybe because it's too much fun... like so many jazz/blues composers the style is often a lot harder than the notes.

My understanding is that Gershwin does indeed enter the public domain in Europe at the beginning of next year (I can't speak for the US, though).
