Hi Jlh,

Overall, this performance was quite good.  It captured the essense of the composition and you put it over well.  It's one of my favorite Scriabin etudes.  I tend to think that the false start put the recording session into an odd focus for you, which showed up in accuracy--quite a few finger slips, but nothing too glaring.  Subsequently, you were a bit "off your game" compared to your usual standard.  I'm going to guess that before playing the first note, you were not mentally concentrating on preparing the attack.  Continuity and fluency were excellent though.  I think if you were to re-record this piece it would be even better.  You'll be ready with this piece for your recital in two weeks, I'm sure.

Have you looked into Scriabin's Op. 42 Etudes yet?  A couple of years ago I spent time on No. 6 in D flat.   Although Scriabin is known for writing a murderous left hand, this etude takes the prize in that regard.  I finally gave up on it,  but will return to it some day when it least expects it, haha!

Thanks rachfan!

Yeah, this is brand new and I'm struggling with notes a bit still...  It's a tough etude to play without finger slips, but I'm sure it will be better in a few days or so....

No, haven't looked at those etudes yet... you know of any good recordings online?

For Op. 42, I like the recordings by the late Ruth Laredo--but some people never appreciated her playing as much as I do.  But if you could find her renditions, it would be a good start and give you a good benchmark for comparing other recordings of those etudes.

Hi jlh,

I really liked your performance of Etude Op. 8 No. 12. I heard a lot of recordings of this Etude, but I never get bored listening to it. A few slips, but that wasn't bothering me at all!

I've uploaded the Op. 42 Etudes for you, played by Arthur Greene. You can download them here:

Op. 42 No. 5 is definitely my favorite.

dear jlh,

i'm not at your level - so i couldn't reply to specifics about what scriabin may have intended (for middle voicing - and stuff with pedal).  it seems that most everything is 'in place' but occasionally muddy.  not very many muddy places - but the ones i notice is where the rh is going up - and you are playing it fairly loudly so as to counteract the lh bass vibrations.  try playing with your hands closer to the bass notes and softening it just slightly and then bringing down the volume a bit in the rh.  i think scriabin can be a lot like debussy.  understated and beautiful and still a bit 'frenetic' or whatever.  i like the nervous tension -

but, one last thing!  you don't need any nervous tension in your body.  the first thing i noticed is that you are observably tense - even though you play very relaxed.  your facial expression and your neck give it away.  try sitting an inch (or two or three) lower.  i hope you'll have an adjustable bench at your recital.  the tenseness (i feel) comes from sitting too high.

ps you're not far off with the total relaxation - but my teacher told me to keep neck above the spine and when you feel like leaning forward - do the opposite - lean back. it's REALLY hard at first.  then - when you do lean forward - it's fewer and farther between and makes you look as relaxed as you are when you are playing.

josh this is on the way to becoming great thanks for posting

i will suggest you differentiate more between these two rythms which occur throughout:

remeber one is a sixteenth the other is a 32nd and when people learn this piece at first they tend to play them both as sixteenthish

keep it up

if you posted this back in february i guess you've improved on a lot or even shelved it now, but i'd just like to say well done - it's even harder than the Chopin etudes  i think.
on this recording i think you could do with a bit more dynamic punch especially in the right hand. (it could be the recording quality though). i think you could land the focal point of each phrase with a bit more passion, the challenge is always to shape the musical phrases regardless of the fiendish difficulty of the piece.
just very high level criticisams though, you've learnt it well.

Thanks Phil!

Yes, I think I improved a bit...  This was the last piece on the recital program on Feb 20, and if you want to see what I changed and how it progressed up to that point from this humble video, check out this topic:

Again, thanks for the input!

Beyond that, spend time making sure you can play the LH PERFECTLY EVEN at first, as this will help when you decide later where you want to use rubato.  Also, get in the habit of accenting on the beat a bit, as it will make it clearer.  Don't get discouraged if it takes awhile to get up to speed.  There are a lot of notes and the pattern frequently changes in the LH.  Take it slow and speed will come.  Make sure you don't have tension in the hand/arm on the last 2 pages!!

Good luck!
