Ornamentation question
on: February 06, 2007, 05:38:22 AM
Hi,
can someone please tell me the ornamentation that Glenn uses in the bass of the Aria, bar 21, in this video?
https://video.google.com/url?vidurl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2Fvideoplay%3Fdocid%3D-6984208089899995423%26q%3Dgoldberg%2Bvariations%26hl%3Den&docid=-6984208089899995423&ev=v&esrc=sr1&usg=AL29H20i8urXvy8FL_clrnqNoM9GkZSWAQ
The measure starts at 1:46 (and the same ornamentation is used in the following measure. i omitted the lower voice b/c i don't know how to use the notation software, haha)
Here is what i thought it was, but i'm probably wrong:
thanks

Yes, that is more or less it.
I say 'more or less it' because it really does not matter. What matters is that an ornament sounds beautiful. GG did it his way. Others will have done it differently. Try not to get too hung up on playing a certain number of notes because the pianist on the latest recording you listened to did so.
Play the variations now, and you will come to certain conclusions. In 10 years time, these will have changed. In 20 years, they will have changed again, and so on for the rest of your life.
Get the point I am making?

thanks!
yes, i definitely get your point - i see it the same way, ornaments should be about adding beauty and grace, and not the technical aspect per se. i am writing a little analysis of GG's Goldberg recordings and his interpretations. and while i do play the Goldbergs myself, i use my own ornamentation
