I think it would be much more easy to spot if we had some kind of alert when we have new instant messages... or at least have a sign saying "you've got 143 unread messages"
It would be even beter if they were actualy instant, so that we wouldn't have to refresh the browser.

Yes, these would be good features to have.  Or how about the option for e-mail notification when we have messages?
