Key Not Working Properly - Can I Fix it Myself?
on: February 08, 2007, 12:12:39 PM
Hi All,

I'm having a problem with my piano because it's been so cold that with the heat on all the time the humidity in the piano room is low.  Anyway, one of the keys (C#) isn't working properly.  Upon investigation, the hammer is wobbling from left to right such that it is only hitting 1 of the 3 strings.  Is there any easy way to fix this myself (i.e. screw to tighten) or do I need to have the technician back to the house?  I just had the piano tuned about 1.5 months ago and I hate to have to have him back so soon...

Thanks,
atticus 8)

Center pin is loose in the flange birdseye, or the bushing cloth  is worn. Or the wood of the butt flange is cracked. Time to have your Tech back. This is not a do-it-yorself problem.

I totally agree. I play the piano, I do not fix or repair them. I have the utmost respect and admiration for my Piano Tech. He is a professional who, keeps my piano in top working order. I would not hesitate contacting him for any small item that needs attention. I pay him for his services every time he comes and I would expect to. It is a lot cheaper for him to come and spend 20 minutes on a key repair than the time and money it would cost to have him fix something that I did. If you don't have a good tech then you need to do some research and find someone who is well known in your area with a good reputation. Then all you have to worry about is practicing. Good luck,  :)

hm...

I actually had a similair problem..

I just went on to explore and I found out there was a 'pin' that runs through all the hammers.. and just had to give it a push because it was sticking out, that fixed it. :)
