Try Schoenberg's 6 little pieces, Webern's Kindstuck, and some of the later pieces from Bartok's Mikrokosmos.

Kurtag's Jatekok is probably as good a starting point as any :O

The thing about modern music... most of it is copyrighted
Try ordering from amazon or sheetmusicplus

That is exactly what I was going to suggest.  Those miniatures are amazing... but some movements (*cough*PerpetuumMoble*cough*) make me cringe.  I still love them to death.

However I'm unable to find a score for any of them, which makes me sad.  Gar.

Does Barber count as 'modern' ? His music is probably as far as I can go in terms of appreciation.

Not targeting you specifically, but I find it mildly amusing that some of the biggest "proponents" of copyrights on this forum also have the most extensive collections of bootlegs.

I find it greatly amusing...
Still, I try to refrain from sharing music from recent composers, especially if they are still alive
It's not that much about the law, which is confusing and incomprehensible, it's more out of respect to their works

I'm not seeking to argue with you here but, just as a matter of curiosity, whom do you have in mind?

Jre and Thal

Whenever someone requests a modern piece, both tend to respond with "it's under copyright, can't share it"

OK, but do you suspect - and with amply good reason - that these two nevertheless possess substantial stocks of downloaded copyright scores?
