The issue of race....
on: February 20, 2004, 03:08:22 AM
a curiousity....
are there any black people here? any middle eatern type folks? any native americans? any hispanics or anything?

i wonder if knowing about other peoples races on this forum would cause our opinions to change about them, or anything like that.
if i found out anyone on this board was black(or any other racial minority) the only think that i would think, was that its great that there is a diversity of races enjoying the piano....

what are your thoughts, and races?  ;)

Anyone like Bobby McFarran?  I don't care for all of the music he performs,  but that guy is amazing!  I love his solo of "Air on a G String".

I live in the True North :).  My mom's half North Korean, half South Korean (though there was really no difference before the division;)) and my dad is Italian.  That makes me quite the unique person :P.

100% Chinese.

Have you heard of Christian Sands? He's about 15, lives in Connecticut, and an AMAZING jazz pianist. I don't know enough about jazz to judge, but my teacher does, and even he meets her standards. He's African American.

truth be told, i'm a football fan;). anyway, south africa had to qualify for the world cup agaisnt ghana. So i came across a ghanain soccer forum and joined in the build up discussion to the game. All was cool for a week or so, until i mentioned that i'm white. A number of the members hurled racial abuse at me until i told them i'm not using the forum any further. they weren't only abusive towards me, but to other nationals from countries such as nigeria, ivory coast, democratic republic of congo, liberia etc. A few members called posters from these countries monkeys, black apes, and other insults of the like. i never knew of black on black racism till i saw that.
anyway,so yes my point, once the guys there knew of my skin colour i was doomed and a became a pinboard for mistreatment. There were a number of members that came to my defense and apologised for what their countrymen had said to me. quite a horrible experince.

The darker you are the harder it is. You get judged more critically be employers, friend and children, ironically.

And they are all black ???

thats stupid!
over here black guys dont like foreigners from nigeria, zimbabwe, angola etc. they claim they're responsible for the majority of violent crime which then gives local black south africans a bad name. more a case of xenophobia though.
people have to drop stereotyping, it's a terrible error of judgement.

That's actually false. It doesn't matter how dark you are not just in Detroit, but anywhere in the U.S.. I've found that if people find out that if you have even just 1% of African in your blood, then they automatically place you in a box at the bottom of their priorities list. Trust me, I would know. ;)

Well, I'm African-American and I LOVE piano and classical music.  Not that race matters though.  :-/

Someone said it right...the piano doesn't know what race you are, and the piano doesn't discriminate.  :)    That's one good thing!  ;)

Howdy

I have a question i have thought about lately, that i cant really figure out.
As we all know Africa is mainly poor, at least south of Sahara. The reason for this have i been told is the colonization done by the Europeans. They took the healthiest men, and sold them as slaves. They also made the Africans work for them, and took all the profit themselves (which has been done to this very day). Anyway.

However, I haven`t heard about the African history before the colonization. That is, Africa south of Sahara. All over the world, different highly developed societies have grown, with the exception of Africa south of Sahara. At least so it seems to me.

Recently i spoke with a guy from Ethiopia, who told me that their country has lots of resources, but they never get to use it, because white people controls it. This appearently was the case in most places in Africa.
So, if Africa has much resources, why didnt a big society evolve there, to fight back the Europeans?

I guess i first of all should ask: Was there a big society south of Sahara? I may be wrong when assuming that there was no big society, im basing my assumptions on what i have been tought in school and elsewhere. And since i havent heard of any, e reckon that there was none.

I think this part of the African history is neglected, and i am curious what happened.
So, does anyone know how it all worked out? Any socialantropologists here?

Anyone?

Africa and Africans were not considered 'poor' before the white man created mayhem over there. They were perfectly fine. They've survived thousands of years before haven't they?

Africans had no need to grow big societies based on resources and such. Like I said before, they were better off before]/i] the white man came.

Im sure they had it better before the white man came, but why wasnt there a big society, like the egyptians, babylonians, mayas ect....?

I think that man has an inherited need to expand, become better, conquer.. Why didnt this happen in South Africa, in a way that a highly developed society arose?

Why? I think everybody is equal!
But that's the real, cruel world. it happens in Hong Kong either. HongKongers don't like Indian, Indo, Thai, African... anyone who is darker than asian. No matter how hard you work, if your skin is dark, then, you'll be regarded as a second-class citizen, hard to get a job, can't enter local schools,... :( But as a chinese, i can't find any problems with them  >:( i have many friends with darker skin. when i walk in street with them, passer-bys have prejudice on me. verbal attack, even not willing to sell things...  but i don't care!  :)

I didnt know what race was untill i got my second black eye aged 11, i was then soon shown the dark side by my new and much older muslim gangster, not a fanatic but a gangster. Anyway i have learnt that one should walk alone in life. Intresting mix of people on this websight.

You shouldnt, but unfortunately other people still do. Ahm immediately sized up by first appearance and people are usually afraid of me until ah give them reason/excuse to feel otherwise. If ah dont have mah hair trimmed or edged up, ah become like a giant demon that haunts people in their dreams.  8) Ironically, many overcompensate for this fear by outwardly showing a variety slightly exaggerated sentiment. Ironically, ah juss ignore them all
