I have finale notepad at my house and finale 2003 at my school. If I was to put my compositions on a disc from home would they work at school and vice-versa?

Only if it is the same version of Finale, or if the file you want to use is made by a version of Finale higher than the other version. So version 2004 files will work for Finale 2004. Finale 2003 files will work for Finale 2004, but not the other way around.

also consider saving the file in different formats, and see the result.
