on: February 17, 2007, 01:21:21 AM
Its often discussed which school is the best in the world for piano performance along with who is the best teacher etc.  WHat I should like to ask is which schools have an international reputation for teaching young teachers how to teach piano! and who are the most respecte teachers of teachers?

In the US, I tend to think that Jane Magrath is probably one of the most respected pedagogy teachers.  She teaches at the University of Oklahoma, which has had one of the best pedagogy programs (graduate-level) for a long time.  Some of their other personnel has changed, but she is still there.

I've thought the same thing.  What's the top for teaching?

Im told the pedagogy dept of the Moscow state conservatory is very fine. By a friend who studied at the performance dept there. Ive heard stewart Gordon is also excellent I think he is in california if im right?? Where exactly.  I donk tknow of anywhere with a special reputation in the UK and unfortunately I say this of my country - I think its shows.. most of our pedagogy sources are American.

Stewart Gordon is at the University of Southern Cal, LA.  SMU (Souther Methodist University) offers a Master's Degree - they have a good piano/pedagogy faculty and resources.

One of the best schools for piano pedagogy in the US is Northwestern University School of Music. Through the years, Northwestern has produced several well-known graduates who have become distinguished pedagogues. One of them is Jane Magrath.

Recommended Book By Jane Magrath: Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performing Literature, an Albert publication. An invaluable resource for evaluating and selecting solo piano literature.
