Felix Blumenfeld, OP. 21 #2
on: February 26, 2007, 02:25:57 PM
Continuing the parade of late-romantic Russians, although he's best known for being the teacher of Barere and Horowitz, Blumenfeld wrote a helluva lot of piano music, much of it quite good, I think.  This particular piece is subtitled, "Moment de desespoir"

does it mean 'moment of despair?'  it does sound kind of despairing - and yet hopeful.  very beautiful.  it's like there are these moments of doubt - but, after contemplation - there are some very confident moments.  i really like this piece.  wow.  it really turns - there in the bass. that was  interesting.  thanks for sharing one of felix blumenfeld's compositions!

Hi koji,

Thanks so much for selecting fine works from the less known and played repertoire.  It makes for very exciting listening experiences.  This piece by Blumenfeld is yet another gem you've enable all of us to discover.  As usual, your playing was the last word in expression and clarity of line.
Interpreting music means exploring the promise of the potential of possibilities.

I would like to hear this piece played, but i guess the attachment is deleted or no longer valid? If you could repost Thracozaag, that would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

This thread is very old; I don't think Koji posts here anymore. You might be able to get hold of him via PM at Piano World.

I am indeed aware of the fact of the thread 'age', but according to his profile, thraco was last active:

So we will see if he notices, else i might indeed join another forum to ask for it. In general I am interested in blumenfeld recordings, so if you have any other suggestions please feel free!

Thanks,
Hans

Thanks anyway for the effort. I ordered Blumenthal's recording of the blumenfeld etudes yesterday as well, you happen to know about the quality? Its hard music to come by it seems, a shame..

I have a recording I'll send you. Check your PM.

The performer is not noted, but it sure sounds like Koji to me.

Do you have Philip Thomson's recording of Blumenfeld's Complete Preludes and Impromptus?

The 24 Preludes Op.17 are wonderful, approaching and even equaling Chopin's.

The Impromptu in G flat Op.13 No.2 is one of the most glorious pieces ever written.

I do not have it yet, but i will be ordering it soon i think. The classical CD shop just around the corner was unable to order it, so i'll have to do it via the internet i guess. I have played through a few of the pieces, they are very enjoyable, not easy at all, but certainly worth the effort. A good recording always makes it a bit easier though.

Thanks for your help so far!

Hans
