Thalberg or Liszt?

For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert. (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

I assume it is the Liszt.
This has been a popular theme for transcriptions.
Thalberg
Herz
Heller
Prudent
Czerny
Pixis
Meybeer himself.
