Windows Vista
on: March 01, 2007, 06:49:44 AM
I am just about to buy a new notebook. Is Windows Vista okay? Does it work together in a network with Windows XP? Will it be possible to install Finale 2005 on Vista? :P

I would wait some time because all the drivers aren't available for Windows Vista and a lot of programs have problems functioning properly. On top of that, when you don't have a OMGWTFPWWNNN-computer it will make your computer rather slow.

That is not the problem, Windows Vista eats a shitload of RAM.

I could have one with 2048 Mb RAM or one with1024. Guess 2048 is better then? Ok it's anyway better :P Or would be 1024 enough?

1024 is about enough to turn a Vista computer ON and look at it's nice purty visuals.  To think about running programs on top of that, you'd probably need more.  I'd go dual core processor too.

I'm staying away from Vista for a while yet.  I don't like what I'm hearing regarding all this Digital Rights Management in tech reports.

As Kassaa mentioned, drivers for hardware are not all written yet.  So stuff you have kicking around won't necessarily be able to work yet.

Meanwhile, I like these new Mac book Pro laptops.  (Mind you I'm a Windows user, but all these reports on Vista has me seriously thinking about a Mac).

I've gotta agree with Kassaa on this.  You're going to need a huge amount of RAM to run Vista.  If you're going to do anything with graphics, video, or sound, get a Mac.  Now here is an interesting idea...  If you go high-end and get a good dual core Mac, you can run Vista on one processor and Mac OSX on the other.  And if the vista ever fries out... you still got yourself a top of the line Mac, which is THE coumputer to use if your dealing with media.

I have Vista on my new UBERTECHOMGWTF PC, and it is smooth and purdy, very fun too.

I'd advise getting it, as long as you have another computer with XP to also use, becuase not everything works on Vista.

But NO you do not need more than 1GB of ram, unless you use alot of stuff, but still go for the 2GB for futureproofness.

I find it hilarious that MSN doesn't work on Vista! That's like one of their biggest software! Gimme a Mac any day, especially now with the intel chip.

Anyway- I have got this vista thingy since a while now--almost nobody else has it. It works. Even with a bit less of RAM. It seems to be not much better than XP. Some features are better. It works together with XP in a wireless network, which I have set up myself (and that's saying something lol) There are some really annoying things though. Every once in awhile it won't let me save files on my other computer. It says always that these "folders are protected" or whatever. Argh. like all the other computer systems too anyway. Stupid. What makes the difference? I sorta like it though. I like the startup sound, it reminds me of so many things ;D.

I think a lot of this is vastly untrue. I got my new laptop in May, a new HP dv2000 series with 1.8 gHz processor and 1024 RAM, and it runs superbly fast.

many games/programs do not work on Vista. Finale works but the supported drivers for attaching a musical keyboard don't .

Does anyone here successfully run an audio interface with Vista?  Something like the Firepod or the MOTU 8 pre.

My sister have Vista. It is satisfying but I prefer Window XP better. Certain programs are not downloadable and I need many of those programs.

Well, there are disadvantages and advantages. But I still prefer XP.

Hey Pianowolfi,

If you have some dough to spend on that $hit I'd seriously consider a new Macbook--dual CPU, can run both Mac and Windows, just plain sexy, with battery which would not run off its life on overseas Paris--New York flight. Even if you don't need that, just consider Mac's internet security.
I'd wait until Vista becomes more popular and has all the old programs compatability drivers settled up--you know, I 'am an old school and still consider XP an overkill.
If it was me and I did not have to run latest ProTools, I'd still run Win98Se with some security updates  :-[.
You know, I hate all those additional features I have no interest in, taking all CPU and memory power. :(

Best, M

Thank you very much, Marik :). I have XP and Vista, I decided against a macbook because of the price, I prefer saving for a Steinway--but okay maybe it was the wrong decision. I use my XP compy for all the sound things, I run a Yamaha AW 1600 Workstation for recordings since a while which seems to work well together with XP ( never tested it with Vista though), but I am still in the learning phase...so far I like XP the most, more than 98 Se. Btw I use Finale which works well with both systems. They work also pretty well together in a wireless network. Which wasn't the case when I tried to connect 98SE and XP a while back.

Personally, I'd hold off on Vista 'til they get everything sorted out...

Right now I run XP and Linux (dual boot) on my laptop and its great.

For all my basic computing needs I use Linux because it's a million times easier and better than windows (plus nearly EVERY program is 100% free and can be downloaded and installed easily.

Then if I want to play a game or run a windows program I can boot up windows on the same computer.

There are about a million forms of linux if anyone's interested. I use Ubuntu and it works great... plus it can use Beryl which is absolutely amazing (see the vid)

oh and www.ubuntu.com

You can simply burn it to a CD and then boot from the disk to try it out... then if you like it you can partition your harddrive (or install on a second if you have one) and run both windows and linux =D

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
