Inspiring conductors
on: March 11, 2007, 10:22:29 PM
I've just been at a concert given by the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra, and among other things they played 'Rhapsody in Blue' - and made a cracking job of it, I have to say.
The residing image I've come away with - having been sitting up behind the orchestra so I could see the conductor and the pianist well - was the look of beaming pride on the conductor's face when the clarinettist nailed the opening... it was so wonderful to see a good conductor working with the up-and-coming talent and clearly taking such pride in seeing them do well.
It's just a pity the hall was only half full and the local press don't think it's worth their while to send a reviewer to classical concerts unless given by a 'serious' grown-up orchestra. Our young musicians could do with some more support, I think. Notably when the St Petersburg Phil played at the same hall a couple of weeks back the press were clamouring for tickets...

Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most inspiring conductors one will ever see in their lifetime. I don't think I've experienced another concert when EVERY single person in the concert hall is completely engrossed and captivated by the conductor's presence on stage (as well as the music he's drawing out of the orchestra).

For me the most inspiring conductors i have ever met is Darrell Ang from Singapore..
He is the Conductor Laureate and co-founder of the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, was born in Singapore and studied with the composer Leong Yoon Pin. He was recently named the Conductor Laureate of the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in honor of his tireless dedication to the advancement of this young orchestra. which is a damn famous music associate place)
He has also worked with Prof. Otakar Trhlík (Janacek Academy, Brno) and Tomás Koutník (Principal Conductor of the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra, Zlín / Slovak Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Kosice) in the Czech Republic, and most recently with Sir Colin Davis (Principal Conductor, London Symphony Orchestra) in Dresden. Orchestras with whom he has appeared include the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, the Congress Orchestra of St. Petersburg, the Filharmonie Hradec Králove and the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. Beginning with the 2002-2003 season he was appointed Associate Conductor of the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, leading them in highly acclaimed performances with soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre Academy of Young Singers, and at the renowned contemporary music-festival „From the Avant-Garde to the Present Day" in St. Petersburg. Appearances have been planned with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in Tokyo, and with the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice (Poland).
Recently he won the itallian 9th Antonio Pedrotti International Competition for Conductors held in September-October 2006 in Trento, Italy, which is a HARD n prestigous award for musicians.
In addition, he won the young performances award for conducting.
Im inspired by him!
