Bob Zombie (fatigue again)

I didn't get enough sleep last night.  (poor me, I know)

How do you function when you don't have enough sleep?

I feel like a zombie.  Zoned out.  I can't think.  No emotion.  Muscles feel tight and tough. 

I'm just dragging today.


I'm thinking the best thing to do is keep following plans from previous days and just get into doing something.

Of course it would get great if things were ideal and I always got enough sleep, etc.  But I know this will come up again.

Any other ideas?  Is there any way to overcome this and thrive in spite of fatigue?

A 6-pack of disgusting beery rot and "a few drops of lavender(sp.) on your pillow"; what a bizarre combination. It might induce me to do something, but I'm by no means convinced that "sleep" is it...

Since I'm pulling a college school load... I only got 2 hours of sleep last night.  (see the "Why?" thread...)  But as is normal for me, I almost feel more refreshed than if I had just slept 12.  I do suggest that you try not be too stressed out though.. that's typically what kills me.

I'm not quite at the two hours a night stage, but I do work far longer hours than I ought to so I know what over-tired feels like!

My favourite way to unwind is to go have a massage... it can be a bit expensive, but it's worth it! I went for one on Monday, and have been sleeping ten hours a night since...

or, you could try bicycling?  sometimes i leave the house slightly tired and come back wide awake and actually way more energetic the rest of the day.

I sleep, on average, 3-4 hours a night.

It was hard at first, but then I guess my physiology got used to it and I'm fine.

It went away.  Phew!....

I am exercising.  I suppose it could be stress, hence the lack of sleep.

It's just really annoying.  Or more than that.  Definitely a waste of time.  With the amount of "lower" productive hours, I might have been better off to go back to sleep instead of getting moving in the morning.  

Definitely makes me stop and think.  Having to concentrate just to think.  My muscles -- my forearms tightened up from yesterday's practicing and didn't feel right.  Practicing (or anything really) doesn't seem productive -- more like I'm grinding or working against myself rather than pushing on to new things.  Scary.  

I'm getting old.

Red Bull is an energy drink.  Caffiene and vitamins.  No alcohol.  (No!  Don't say it!  No free advertising!)   Expensive stuff though.

I suppose I could up the vitamins.  Vitamin B, etc.

Or it could be from disrupting my normal schedule... If I consisting got that amount of sleep, I imagine I would adjust to it.  Adjust to being zoned out.  Soemthing like that anyway.

a summer vacation. once school restarted, i never went back to a "normal" sleeping schedule!

Yeah, maybe.  Force myself to sleep.


I can still feel it in my forearms.  It's like I didn't recover from yesterday.  Probably didn't.  So I'm just pushing things more.  And then the forms starts to go, etc.  




lilchristine, didn't you feel horrible though?  How long did it take to push through that?  I reeeeeally hate that feeling.  It feels like "I" am really "less" there, that there's less of whatever it is that makes me me.

no, i didn't really feel that bad.
i was tired and a bit fatigued, but it was ignorable.
And I love the night enough that being a little tired for awhile is worth it.

hahah, I hear ya Bob...  If I'm not careful, I slip into nocturnal mode - each night gets later and later, each day gets harder and harder.  I have no idea why, it seems I suddenly get really ambitious at night, no matter how tired I am during the day.  Weekends can be the worst, despite myself I sometimes wind up having a good time with friends partying 'till 7AM.

Bad sleep habits really screws up my practice, can't focus at all.  It also tends to subtly screw up the rest of my lifestyle, if I can't think straight I fall to pieces.  I try to keep an eye on it, and just discipline myself to do the 'wind-down' before too late (brush teeth, floss, prepare for bed).  When I want to practice but am too tired to focus, I take a nap.  Sometimes right in front of the piano, just 10 mins and then I'm ready to go!  There've been times at work where I've dropped what I was doing to have a sleep on the floor.

Given the choice, I figure it's better to sleep in or nap than to go through the day zombied.

Also the general outlook seems to make a difference.  Like a kid at christmas, when you can wake up looking forward to the day ahead, you've got endless energy.  It's amazing what energy we can pull out of nowhere with a change in mood.

...and those energy drinks, they taste like crap.

do not attempt to get medical advice on a pianoforum.  two viagra for tiredness?  your spouse may keep you up all night with that one.  bob, i wouldn't take this advice.  in fact, try to forget it.  try to forget you asked the question.

good advice on that one!  light therapy by just going outside is good.  and, exercise.  it regulates hormones for you and also makes you tired.  even if you work all day - if you go and work out at the gym in the evening - it might make you tired enough to go to sleep.  although, in a few cases with my children it makes them stay up later as they feel revived. 

how about a cup of warm milk, bob?  hot chocolate or something.  there's some chemical in milk that is supposed to make you drowsy.  and then, there's luminaire.  i haven't tried that.  usually if it is only one day a week or several times a month - i don't think it's worth risking kidney damage.  they always say the good things and then...but, this can cause kidney or liver damange.

Yeah, although caveat emptor, it happens to me but I haven't been diagnosed as such.

For exercise, it often means that I'm walking / cycling at some early [or late because 3am today I'd been awake for 2 hours, whereas soon it'll be the time I'm going to bed]  hour rather than because I don't do it. It's not particularly a lack of feeling sleepy or tired, it's just that "days" are not 24 hours long - it's the equiv of not having a leap year I guess, eventually winter months would fall in the middle of summer.

The worst things are that if most of the hours you're awake are "night" it does get a bit depressing [and perhaps if light really is the issue, maybe compounds it, I dunno] and secondly, real life often means that something's happening and so I need to be awake for it, so to get 'back in sync' means spending a day sitting up for over 24 hours [at which point tiredness and stuff like that is an issue]

hmm.  i never really attributed anything to the time change, but now that you mention it - that must be why i feel so good after staying up all night last night.

Excellent!  Another disorder to call my own:  Non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome.  This one has a long name, it'd look impressive on a resume. ;D

But it makes sense, I figured spending all my time in a hole in the ground wasn't healthy.  So far as the cycle of the day is concerned, I might as well be blind.  Well that settles it, I'm getting out of the house.  I miss the outside world anyways.

Exercise too close to bedtime isn't a good idea, once the blood is flowing it takes a while to settle down.  Exercise is what I use when I DON'T want to feel tired, heh.
