Virtuosic Harpsichord Pieces
on: March 17, 2007, 05:38:44 AM
I'm playing the Brandenburg 5 for a concerto on a harpsichord and want to know what is a good encore (for the harpsichord) (something like the Brandenburg's cadenza).

I was thinking of Scarlatti's sonata K. 141

Any other suggestions?

Any non-baroque composers compose for the harpsichord? (what pieces?  ;D)
Thanks!

The most virtuosic piece for harpsichord would probably be Xenakis' Khoai or Naama, but I'm not sure how great that would go over with a Bach crowd >>

For Scarlatti, I would look into K. 517, K 417 and K. 450, although for an ENCORE I might be more inclined to go with Soler, in which case Sonatas 48/49 paired together would work nicely :)

Also, just as a point of interest, Penderecki wrote a really cool Harpsichord Concerto called "Partita for Harpsichord and Orchestra".  An extremely effective piece ;D

Rameau!

Les Cyclopes is a good one. Les Tourbillons also. You can hear both of them here

my piano teacher wrote a mean toccato for the harpsicord.

Thank you for everyone's input! I'll listen to all of them and choose one.
Thanks!

Coincidentally, I've got a student who is getting a harpsichord so I will have access to one. I have very limited experience playing an actual harpsichord, but I have listened to excerpts from many of the pieces mentioned in this thread, none of which seem technically daunting. If I'm looking for a piece written for harpsichord, any era, which one would be considered to be the most demanding technically and available in print?

Probably the Xenakis ones.

Thank you, Pita. Incidentally, I've never seen one of these before:

Probably the Xenakis ones.

I read a few online articles about Xenakis' harpsichord pieces. One writer mentioned that several of his pieces were written for an amplified "4 manual harpsichord", although I can't find anything online about a 4 manual harpsichord in itself.    ??
