Need help with pedal
on: March 21, 2007, 01:24:02 AM
Hello everybody.
I am relatively new with the piano and would like to know when is it apropiate to use the sustain pedal if thats how its called(the one that sustains the notes even when u let go of the key) i try to press it when i feel there isnt a fluid transition from one note to the other and let it go when its starts sounding blurred or when i have the apportunity. but i cant shake the feeling that i am doing something wrong and i find it hard to release the pedal and press it in the timing that i want it to.
Thnx in advance for suggestions.

 Dear Pianoob:
 There are two rules in pedal use:
 1) don't use it to cover bad technique. where you can improve it;
 2) let your discretion guide you.
 Of course, there are some tricks to use properly the pedal, but you need someone (a teacher, perhaps) to show you the difference between full, half, etc; the sincopation.
 About the pedal, try to figure out where (and how much) your best loved performers use it. To myself, that's the best "school" you can have.
 A hint: start studying without pedal. After some practice (maybe I should say "a long time"), it's possible to sight-read with proper pedalling. It's a matter of knowledge of style and interpretation, and technique for that matter.
 Best wishes!
