I'll start having piano lessons!
on: March 29, 2007, 12:07:16 AM
Finally, after a lot of time waiting, I signed for piano classes. I will be paying 33€ monthly, for one hour weekly of piano on Monday, one hour of choir for adults on Tuesday, one hour of music education (you know, theory of notation and stuff) on Wednesday, and an hour of choir for kids on Friday. I think it's a good price.
There are very good teachers, and I like them. But I think they are too easy on the students. I'll give my best.
This Monday I only had a 30 minutes tryout while my mother talked with the teacher, just to set things out, and I associated with their House. They have a Roland HP-102e.
By the phone I told the teacher (female) I knew some stuff, although I'd never had lessons. She told me to forget about Conservatory at this age, but that I could have classes to learn to play the piano just to know some stuff. After I played to her, she told my mother that I can only be in that house till Jully, and that after that I should go to a private Conservatory to start studying seriously, and then transfer to a statal Conservatory. Going to a statal Conservatory is to difficult, to competitive, and there's always corruption. But transfers from other Conservatories are a priority, so it will be easier.
Yesterday I had my first lesson of choir, it was very good... The teacher (male) listened to my voice speaking, and told me to sing as bass. And the fact is I could sing it all, I never thought I could sing bass. Anyway, I told him that it was unlikely for me to be bass, and today (after the music education lesson) we made the test. I'm a tenor, but because I can sing bass, I'm a baritone. I think that's good. I never thought I was a baritone, I didn't even know it existed till yesterday.
My teacher (female) of piano told me I was going to play Ave Maria of Bach/Gounod but not in C. Instead, I would play it in F. So I already started playing it. I'll study the notes flexibly, as in, not defining my fingers exactly, so I can change them if I need to. This way it will be easier for me to evolve. I love this, and I can use that as an advantage. I'll work a lot at home, so we don't need to stop. :)
I wanted to make a sheet of the transposition to F, but I can't do it. I'll use Sibelius. Why can't I put the A as #, but instead the B as b? I think I'd rather have the A as #. Sibelius doesn't let me. Any tips?

I'm sorry for writing so much, but I'm really happy.

Thanks in advance,
     OceanSoul.

So, you're asking how to transpose from C to F in Sibelius?

At the very least, I would think you could just delete the Bb and plug in an A# instead.

If the program is transposing the piece, there may be some setting -- diatonic transposition vs. chromatic, etc.

The original note in the C version is an F, right?  I'm not sure why it wouldn't become a Bb automatically.  That's why I wonder if it's something in the settings.

It's an excellent price, at least for portuguese standards. Where are you? For private lessons with a piano teacher, only an hour weekly, I paid 55€ and that was a reasonable price. To get all that you speak of, I'd have to pay 150€ in a music school.

Once again, where are you? I envy those prices...

Thanks for your replies.

Well, Alex, I'm in a non-official place for people of the town, a place that teaches lots of things, not specifically music, in Corroios. The teachers are good, and they work together with the Conservatories. The teachers are from the Conservatory, and some students in the 7th grade can go there to start teaching and stuff... That place is not very evolved, so I will get what I can from that place, because 'till some level I can be there, and then I go out of that place and go to the Conservatory. :)
If you are in a good level, you don't need that place. We play in a Roland HP-102e. That's not the best, you know?

Bob, well, it's not in a note, it's in the accidentals, before the time mark (4/4). Maybe you're saying that. I'll try to do that manually. Thank you for your tips. In the original Ave Maria there are no accidentals, because the whole piece is in C.

Is it very hard to work both on C and F versions? :\

Goodbye for now,
   OceanSoul.

Thanks, but Corroios where? For what I know, that could be Portugal, there's a place called Corroios here.

Hi again, Alex.
Corroios is in Portugal, near Almada. But it's not near Oporto. I live in Portugal, in Almada.

Best regards,
