Misc. Chamber music
on: March 30, 2007, 04:07:44 PM
Being in the process of composing my own Piano Quintet, I want to look and listen to examples of piano interacting with string instruments, as well as the string quartet. So, I ask for the following:

Brahms Piano Trio No.1 in B major

Any of the Brahms or Beethoven String Quartets

Medtner Piano Quintet

Faure Piano Quintets (both of them, if possible)

Scharwenka Piano Trios

Many thanks to whoever posts them.

Phil

Try also to get the Schumann Piano Quintet (arguably the first truly great work for that medium) and the Piano Quintet by Florent Schmitt (which is dedicated to Fauré), one of the great monuments of French chamber music for piano and strings. Look out also for the piano trio of Ravel, the second piano trio of Bridge and the Tchaikovsky piano trio.

arguably, yes - you forgot Schubert  :D

If it doesn't work - try something different!

Don't let Thal hear you sweet-talking about Schumann.  ;D

I know it's probably floating in your toilet, Thal. Could you please possibly retrieve it, dry it and post a scan?

I'd love the Schmitt, Tchaik, and Bridge. I have the Ravel already. As well as both the Brahms F minor and the Schubert 'Trout' quintet.

Also, as Jre stated, there is no need for the Medtner Quintet, nor, thanks to IMSLP, for the Scharwenka No.2, though I still want No.1. Also, I'd appreciate the Brahms Trio No.2 and the Op.posth. in A major.

Actually, let me fix my wish list: (I would modify it but then the rest of the conversation wouldn't make sense)

Scharwenka Piano Trio No.1

Brahms Piano Trios No.1 in B major, No.2 in C major, Op.posth. No.4 in A major

Schumann Piano Quintet

Faure Piano Quintets Nos.1 and 2

Bridge Piano Trio No.2

Schmitt Piano Quintet

Any Beethoven or Brahms String Quartets

Schubert's 'Death and the Maiden' String Quartet

;D I know it's a lot. Maybe someone else besides Thal has some of these.

Thal can hear what he likes! - and tell me what he thinks of what he hears, if he so chooses!

Also, I'd appreciate the Brahms Trio No.2
Surely one of his most important chamber works; the tension and concentration in that first movement alone is masterly in the extreme - and the almost comical reserve in the marking "poco f" for the final gesture of that movement just takes the biscuit, it seems to me...

Tchaikovsky Piano Quintet

Bridge Piano Quintet No.2
I think that, in each case here, you mean piano TRIO...

Regretfully, i have no quartets, quintets or trios at all. I deleted the lot along with the Schumann that was infesting my hard-drive.

I only collect solo and concerto's now.

Sorry

I'm confused - there is Tchaik piano quintet? I have no idea what IMSLP is.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Actually, just the Tchaikovsky trio, as I was told and corrected by Alistair. Tchaikovsky didn't write a piano quintet, I just mistook Alistair's words the first time around and didn't read carefully enough.  :-[

I have no idea what IMSLP is.
