Stanford or Yale?
on: April 01, 2007, 06:53:42 PM
I got into both, and am not sure where to go. I know you might direct me towards a college forum but I want neutral opinions. If you got into both where would you go and why? (I don't plan on majoring in music but a musical presence is welcome)

First of all, let me say **** you for getting into Yale! (jk!) If you want a musical presence, you've gotta go to Yale. The Yale School of Music is the best non-conservatory music school in the country. Teachers there include Boris Berman and Claude Frank.

Yale was my first choice. I envy you, but that's ok since I'm most likely going to Cornell.

another april fool's joke.  yes.  this one is slightly better.  i mean with a name like virtuosic -this was almost believable.  we already know that some people are geniuses on here - but really - stanford or yale?  who has that kind of money now.  (can i borrow some?)  ursinus college here is $30,000 dollars a year.  let's see - in four years - we could be 120,000 in debt.  how much for yale and stanford?  maybe 300,000 plus?  egads.  just go to the library and give them an april fools.

Thanks for your advice, kriskickass.

btw, this is no joke. I really DID get into both schools. Hopefully I'll be getting a very good financial aid package.

the head of the music department at stanford just died (of old age).  they take music way too seriously.

https://news-service.stanford.edu/pr/01/obit-crosten%20228.html

april fools.  that was six years ago.  a lot has changed. ???
take note:  he was from IOWA.  iowa.  ok.  this music department is not exactly 'high priority.'

he performed at 'midwest revivals?'  ok.  well, the thing is...youhave to take music seriously to go to these places.  basically play while looking somewhat dead.  i would not take huge risks at these universities.  you know, show up unannounced. t hings like that.

longtime friend says 'i remember going to sleep listening to him practice.'

dinkelspiel auditorium?  what a name.  i suppose he died too.

what about harvard?  the famous 'longey' conservatory.  hmm.  who comes up with these names?  these people are wierd.

yale it is.  at least they have a decent sheet music library.  and a collection of musical instruments dating back to early civilization.  do the double major in performance and musicology or something.

but - if you want up-to-date music labs and professors who graduated from juilliard - and a new music building with all new steinways...and decent price for tuition.  i'd say west chester university in pennsylvania.  take the extra money you're saving and go to philly and nyc to listen to concerts on the weekend.

Yes, Harvard.

How are these schools really?  Stanford, Yale, Harvard.

I'd heard of them of course, but not really for music.  I've only met one person from one.  Very good, but when I first heard it I was surprised.  Standford?  For music?

might suffer from astigmatism too early to master the entire piano repertoire.  graduation ceremonies must be a nightmare.

ps i'm sorry for what i said earlier.  i actually think it is commendable for a uni to have high class and older teachers.  they have a lot to add to the collective wisdom.  i think too many teachers are told to retire too young when they have many more years to add and are very helpful to students.  so - kudo's to the guy who died at 91!  even if he retired a few years earlier - he sounded like a great guy.

What ideas do you have for a potential major in college?

I am currently in my junior year at Stanford. Feel free to PM me. Fyi, Itzhak Perlman got pissed at us last time he came by and he's probably never coming back again. By the way, join facebook.com.

None of them are outstanding for music during undergrad. Yale would be the best out of all three, given its access to resources provided by a great graduate music program.
Otherwise try Curtis, Eastman, or Peabody.

This is pointless without knowing what he would major in.

So, what will you major in?  If it's music, probably yale unless you will be doing composition.  If you're doing composition go to Stanford and study with Ferneyhough.

Nope, I'm not an audiophile  ;D
I actually registered here because a classmate of mine posted his Goldberg variations here a year ago. After being gone for a bit, soliloquy, whom I know from violinmasterclass, got me to return. Now I come back on a more regular basis.

Have you visited both campuses?  Spend the money and visit them!!!  You will notice vast differences in the social climate, and you will most likely favor one dramatically over the other.
