This widely used where I live:

A History of Western Music, Seventh Edition (Hardcover)
by Donald J. Grout (Author), Claude V. Palisca (Author), J. Peter Burkholder (Author)
https://www.amazon.com/History-Western-Music-Seventh/dp/0393979911/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-4780501-2345431?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175635263&sr=8-1

Used to be encouraged by the RCM for their history exams.  RCM is changing their stance and no longer suggesting a particular text to use:

The Enjoyment of Music, Tenth Edition (Enjoyment of Music) (Hardcover)
by Kristine Forney (Author), Joseph Machlis (Author)
https://www.amazon.com/Enjoyment-Music-Tenth/dp/0393928853/ref=sr_1_9/103-4780501-2345431?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175635378&sr=8-9

I used an older version of this in uni:

Listen (Hardcover)
by Joseph Kerman (Author), Gary Tomlinson (Author)
https://www.amazon.com/Listen-Joseph-Kerman/dp/0312434251/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-4780501-2345431?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175635600&sr=8-1
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
