Playing a Piano piece with vocals
on: April 07, 2007, 06:55:53 AM
What do you think of the combination of a Piano piece, combined with vocals?

I play some of the "Final Fantasy Piano Collection" pieces and some are transcriptions of songs, with vocals in it. In the Piano versions of the songs, the melody of the vocals is played on the Piano, instead of the vocals itself. The singer and I decided to combine both. I play the Piano transcription of the song and she sings the vocals. What do you think of this? My teacher says it doesn't really "fit", cause the melody, wich she sings, is also played on the Piano. Of course, if we both play/sing the right notes, it doesn't sound bad, but my teacher says I don't give her enough "freedom", cause I also play the melody. I'm aware of that fact and I try to play the melody quite soft, so I don't overpower the vocals.

Recently we've performed the piece a few times. We got very good comments about it and everyone seemed to love it. Though, I did got a little inconvidend about the fact that my teacher said this Piano piece/vocals combination doesn't really fit eachother.

What do you think about this?

I think your teacher's right.Because I've had that experience, but i'm on the singer position..My friend, who play the keyboard, also play the melody part.It sound all right, but I didn't feel comfortable.I felt that I can't put all my expression into the song,so the song didn't sound outstanding.
That's just my opinion, I hope it can help you ;)

it would probably not be too hard to slightly change to top line in the piano - to allow the singer to have flexibity and freedom to be the only one singing the melody.
