Repertoire Suggestion. You might love this or you might not. Long thread title.
on: April 07, 2007, 12:08:16 PM
My most recent pieces were:
Haydn - Piano Concerto in D major.
Scriabin - Etude Op.2 No.1
Prokofiev - Suggestion Diabolique
Chopin - Nocturne op.72 no.1
I really love 20th Century Music, mostly Russian people, I don't mind some Schoenberg though, or whatever, except I haven't played any works by him.
If you would be really nice to suggest some music that are around my level (I don't want any challenges, because I don't want to die young, so don't even think of suggesting a Scriabin Sonata
)
I am looking for these:
1) Possible one piano concerto, just the first movement.
2) Perhaps a sonata too?
3) Some random short pieces, like Suggestion Diabolique
4) One Hungarian Rhapsody? Thinking of no.6 by Liszt
4) Whatever you feel appropriate.
you know, people like Skriabin, Prokofiev, perhaps Rachmaninov.
Then Schoenberg etc.
No idea, any 20th century pieces will do, or late romantic, but yea..
thanks.

My suggestions:
Piano Concerto: don't know about difficulty of early concertos, but maybe an early mozart concerto?
Sonata: well, i suggest the early op.posth scriabin sonata-fantasy
it's nowhere as difficult as his "offical" sonatas. it's 7 pages long and it's very beautiful!
random short piece: since you like russian music, i suggest scriabin preludes. they are all very short (1-2 pages) and very dramatic. from op.11 highlights are 6,10,14,18,24.
they aren't hard, but i remember that no.18 isn't that easy.
grieg lyric pieces are beautiful as well. op.65 no.6 'wedding day at troldhaugen' is recommended
mendelssohn wrote some beautiful songs without words. i personally recommend op.19 no.1
hungarian rhapsody? i'm not a liszt expert so i will leave this question open
what i feel appropriate:
try some baroque pieces
scarlatti sonatas like: K365, k435,K492,K27
there are many gems...

Yo try the Grieg Sonata... It's amazing, and I'd say about at your level (although I'm unfamiliar with the concerto)

NOOOO!! NO BAROQUE! NO BACH NO SCARLATTI!!
*chokes and dies*
op.posth scriabin sonata-fantasy ? Never heard of that before. might give that a try, but again, it's Scriabin, going to be a major pain.
https://www.piano.ru/scores/skriabin/skr-son-fant-86.pdf
errrr.............
I will die..
I was hoping something in the lines of Prokofiev..but the easiest ones (1 and 4 are slightly above my league..soo)
Yepp, Scriabin Preludes for sure, working on some of the op.11 already. Short and Powerful, perfect.
HR Number 6 I guess.
This is it so far:
HR 6
Scriabin Preludes Op.11 6, 9, 10, 14, 18, 24 (this probably will change)
One sonata from 20th century needed.
I have the HR to complement the 20th century nature of my repertoire.
Thanks though.

How about Prokofiev's second sonata? (Or at least a couple movements)
Another good composer I think you should look into (whom I think is russian) Would be Stachinsky (NOT Stravinsky) You can find his stuffums on piano.ru, it's both russian and modern. Possibly one of his cannon preludes(no.3 is gorgeous) or sonatinas?
Check out some of Rachmaninoff's preludes and especially his etudes-tableaux. Good luck to you!

Well it might be out of my league, but I don't mind doing single movements of sonatas, so I suppose that might make repertoire suggestion easier.

Concerto suggestions:
First movement of the Schumann concerto
Saint Saens PC no 2--I think it is pretty accessible in the 1st movement, although the 2nd and 3rd are quite difficult.
Since you have played a Classical concerto, you may not want to do Mozart--but PC no. 23 in A (K488) and no. 17 in G (K453) are gorgeous. For drama, no 20 in D minor (K466) is wonderful.
Beethoven 3 --not as Haydn-or Mozartian as nos 1 and 2. Hard, though.
I have not played it, but I hear Shostakovich PC no 2 is fun, and playable.
Good luck!

Hmmmm reconsidered.
I checked the ATCL repertoire, and decided to give myself a great challenge:
(learned Schoenberg 6 little pieces for piano in 30 minutes lol)
1) One or Two Chopin Etudes (looking at the Butterfly etude)
2) Scriabin Preludes op.11 6, 9, 10, 14
3) Scriabin Sonata Fantaisie!!!!
4) Poeme 1 and 2 (woooo)
5) One of the 'named' Beethoven Sonatas
That's it for my to be repertoire list for now. It's mostly in ATCL and slightly above, but otherwise how will I improve? heck..
Alright.
BRING ON THE CHALLENGE
YEEHAW.
*dies from first bar of Scriabin Sonata Fantaisie*
