Organs!!!!
on: April 07, 2007, 02:35:44 PM
I play the church organ and it's the best instrument I've ever laid hands on!!! It just gives you a feeling of power and greatness inexplicable to anyone. Is there other people that share some part of my opinion? E-mail me!!!!

im playing in the easter morning service tomorrow. They've given me a rotten hymn to play  - basically no time signature (Blackbird Leys 10 10.10 10. - if you know it, any tips appreciated!). It's even worse because I don't know what it sounds like.
Having said that, my sight reading has got so much better this year since I've been playing fortnightly at my church.
They are having their organ refurbished so I'm on a Kawai electric piano, but I'm fortunate enough to have access to St. Peter's, Burnley for lessons and the occasional practise.
Thanks,
Tom

Thats good to hear!! Since you yourself are playing at church services, you would know that at first it's a bit nerve wrecking? Or do you never get nervous before such a service. You can e-mail me at geldenhuys_h@yahoo.com

Yes, there is a lot of pressure, at least for me, and some things that worked okay at home seem much harder (and so much faster!) during the services.

It's worked out well for me, because the sheer terror has forced me to find enough time to practice.  I've made a lot of progress since I started playing church services regularly.

I like the organ much better, but the congregation seems to prefer piano and many of the hymns are written to be played on piano.  I don't get enough practice time on organ, either, so I haven't learned to use the feet yet.

same here... practise time is precious... easter went ok though but the choir didn't know the three communion hymns. I was playing on my own near enough! I had to play 11 pieces during the service! each sunday is like a hymnathon!
